Network needs & opportunities continue to grow. Enacting large-scale and new uses by lighting existing dark fiber for "big science" applications, etc.

Optical Network Infrastructure Frameworks are being led by NIPPERS - "network infrastructure plumbing persons for education & research." to create research & education optical networks. The USA isn't the first to explore these ideas (Canada, Netherlands, Australia, etc.).

Mission - to advance the research, clinical and educational goals of members and other institutions by establishing and maintaining a framework for networks. Currently made up of 16 members, including the OK State Board of Regents (via OneNet). NOT a network but a framework for building and connecting other networks. Uniquely devoted to networked research projects.

Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas should be live by late summer. Current projects include TeraGrid Alliance from NSF, built using several 10G Lambda's, Pacific Wave project including international connections, UltraScience and others.

Future: Gigabit to the home (as a start)?! Extending infrastructure of the future to all citizens
