College, departmental, and externally hosted databases and applications proliferate even in the most committed "one-vendor" institutions. It is simply not possible for any one vendor to meet even a significant majority of the needs across a complex institution. An emerging set of open interoperable technologies allows application providers to deliver specialized solutions while preserving the continuity of the user experience and consistency of data.
