First phase of the project, to be completed in November 2007, includes upgrades to Oracle’s PeopleSoft Campus Solutions and Human Resources Management System Release 9.0 and the PeopleSoft Enterprise Portal Solutions Release 9.0. Immediately following, phase two upgrades MICA’s financial management system to Oracle’s PeopleSoft Financial and Supply Chain Management Release 9.0 by June 2008. MICA is running virtual servers using VMware and a LeftHand Networks SAN. According to Ted Simpson, MICA’s director of administrative systems, “This project will be completed by our in-house campus technology staff with limited-to-no engagement with consulting firms. We will rely, instead, on our own staff’s expertise and the partnerships we have developed and continue to develop with peer institutions. This collaborative approach to project management is one that MICA hopes to formalize as a best practice in the higher education technology arena.” “MICA Connected” involves upgrades to existing systems and the implementation of new ones bringing people, information, and services together through technology. MICA, founded in 1826, is among the top visual arts colleges in the nation and enrolls approximately 1,644 undergraduate students and 228 graduate students from 47 states and 46 foreign countries. MICA offers programs of study leading to the bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.), master’s, and master of fine arts (M.F.A.) degree, as well as post-baccalaureate certificate programs and a full slate of credit and noncredit courses for adults, college-bound students, and children. MICA is also recognized as an important cultural resource for the Baltimore/Washington region, sponsoring many public and community-outreach programs, including more than 100 exhibitions by students, faculty, and nationally and internationally known artists annually, as well as artists’ residencies, film series, lectures, readings, and performances.
