Outcomes Assessment can and does mean several different things in higher education today. But before considering all the variations, let's consider the commonalities. The simplest meaning of assessment is to observe and judge. Outcomes in this context means student learning outcomes, most commonly expressed as what a student knows, is able to do, or disposed to do, as a result of an educational process. One large source of variation in what outcomes assessment means today is the variable definitions of different kinds of learning outcomes. Whatever the definition of outcomes, or the purpose of doing outcomes assessment -- another important source of variation -- the first common principle of outcomes assessment is the same: being as clear as possible about the outcomes one wants to assess, and especially the criteria for judgment.
