Created by Carly Born (Carleton College) on January 30, 2008

Kathleen Tyner, U of Texas at Austin.

What is New Media Literacy?

"The ability to access, analyze, evaluate and produce communication in a variety of forms." The Aspen Institute, 1992.

(Colorful graphic titled A Multiliteracy Mandala, CONTENT at the center, surrounded by DIstribution, Production, Audience, Narratives, Tools, Aesthetics..)

New Media Tools:

  • The Intellect
  • Gestural
  • Orality
  • Alphabetic
  • Analog
  • Digital
  • Pervasive

Narratives, Aesthetics (see graphic that will be online later).  PPT will also be online later.

Multiliteracy Skills need to be wide and varied to cope.

Aims & Purposes for New Media Learning

  • civic engagement
  • social capital
  • career pathways
  • academic pathways
  • knowledge and skill
  • problem-solving

Understanding the power of synthetic imeersive environments for language learning (and learning in general):

  • harnessing the creative power of video games for the 'good' of education
  • encouraging the development of Ss' identity in a way that incorporates the Ss' real identity with new skills and new 'identities' acquired in foreign contexts

Images of locations were scanned into 3 D.

Learning Circle: Innovations in Faculty Development

Created by Carly Born (Carleton College) on January 29, 2008
  • faculty learning communities tied to the mission of the university
  • alternative modes for outreach (underground movements)
  • food, alcohol
  • brown bags, enticing by doing short tech intros over the period of lunch
  • require fac to submit proposals for summer development projects
  • core literacies for technology
  • faculty come to the table when tech solves a problem, so how do we create those problem spaces
  • what you call it matters, 'workshop' is a dirty word, call it 'faculty prep'
  • developing online learning communities to compliment faculty learning communities
  • engage librarians in faculty development
  • need to build long term trust relationships with faculty before they will engage in the risk-taking of exploring new methodologies
  • Theme-based events to create ambience at workshops (e.g. Indy 500)
  • getting faculty to present their work to other faculty, getting them to talk to each other about what they do
  • helping faculty to understand where to go for what kind of help

"In the midst of other priorities, scholls can choose to view this emerging pressure for change from their student body in either a positive or negative light.  On the positive side, through the growing use of the Internet outside of school, educators have the opportunity to expand their reach and to engage students in new and thoughtful ways.  On the negat.....

Quote from Pew study, called The Digital Disconnect.

Key Findings:

  • disconnect between how students use the internet for school and how they use it during school, under teacher supervision

A Digi-Drama about Fear 2.0

Martha Burtis, Director Teaching and Learning Technologies, U of Mary Washington
Barbara Ganley, Middlebury College
Leslie Madsen-Brooks, U of CA, Davis
Barbara Sawhill, Oberlin College

They weren't kidding about the Drama!!

Wonderful movie at the beginning, excellent audience participation!  Excellent music!  Film by Laura Blakenship

Oh, it's a double feature!  Stagnation: Do you fear it?

And yet another movie...this is great!

Metaphor of Scylla and Charybdis for the fate of instructional technology today.  The worry that experimental faculty are discouraged from using technologies that "are not supported by IT".

How to let faculty to play with new tools, help them understand that it's ok to experiement, it's ok to let students explore, to take risks in designing their curricula.

Group work activity on how to overcome fear 2.0...

Problems:

  • new technology decisions were not based on solid data, more on gut feelings

Created a formalized Assessment Process

  • how to effectively use resources (human and financial)
  • Accessibility
  • technical infrastructure
  • Impact on Teaching/Learning Environment
  • policy and legal framework
  • security and privacy

Purdue specifically has issues with motivating faculty (who primarily do research) to rethink their teaching.

Concept:

  • Penn State HOT Teams
  • Penn State Community Hubs
  • EDUCAUSE Seven Things You Should Know

Goals for htis program:

  • Evaluate technology in light of pwerful production services
  • tie learning theory and pedagogy directly to technologies

Methodology

OneNote 2007

Created by Carly Born (Carleton College) on January 29, 2008

Searchable hand-written notes, even when not coverted to text.

Tablet PCs in Engineering Education & Research

Jane C. Prey, External Research & Programs, Microsoft, jprey@microsoft.com

Joseph G. Tront, Bradley Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Virginia Tech, jgtront@vt.edu

Tablet Use Goals

  • Make presentations more dynamic & spontaneous
  • Increase classroom interactivity
  • enhance collaboration
  • improve/increase note-taking
  • improve information recall

Rationale for move to tablets

  • to support pedagogical directions
  • provide advanced pedagogical tools to promote and support faculty/sutdent engagement in and outside of the classroom

Exercise where 'students' in the room submit their notes pages to teacher, who can see all submissions and show on projection one at a time.

Results show that students who are usually quiet will participate more.

Redefining Electronic Portfolios

Created by Carly Born (Carleton College) on January 28, 2008

Introduced eportfolios in 1st year seminar courses to all freshman.

Initial rollout in 2005, students didn't quite understand the point, mentors (i.e. teachers) weren't all technically competent, Bb was not flexible enough to allow for student creativity.

A revision of the portfolio requirements in 2006, tech introduced a new system for creating the portfolios that was much easier to use, lesson plans were easier for the mentors to follow.  Things really got better.  Peer mentors were introduced in second year.

Portfolio reqs in 2007:

  • welcome message
  • personal mission statement
  • international week
  • activities
  • compass
  • academics
  • Career Goals
  • community service
  • paradigm shift
  • My thoughts
  • Creative item
    • reflect on ethics
    • reflect on habit
    • photo album
    • art work, music or multimedia that YOU created

They embraced the ideas of Steven Covey's book  called... missed the title.  something about being an effective college student.

What Wikipedia Can Teach Us About the New Media Literacies

Created by Carly Born (Carleton College) on January 28, 2008

By: Henry Jenkins, Director, Comparative Media Studies Program, MIT

Middulbury College History Dept issued a statement about Wikipedia and found themselves in the middle of a large debate about the value and quality of Wikipedia.

"Basically, they are recommending exactly what we suggested - students houldn't be citing encylopedias.  I would hope tey wouldn't be citing Enclopdea Britannica, either.  If they had to put out a statement not to read Wikipedia, I would be laughing.  They might as well say don't listen to rock /n/ roll either. "  Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia Co-founder

Mr. Jenkins seems to be pointing these issues out to get people talking about Wikipedia with each other and with their students.

Genki (lively) intro to Educause by Diana Oblinger.

Julie Little, Interim Director to ELI

(tag team presentation from the two)

  • Providing ways to reflect on learning
  • Designing learning activities to facilitate connections and reflection

This is a learning event, and to accommodate more than one learning styles they have provided different ways for each of us to learn something new (experiential opportunities, conversation opportunities, learning from others inside and outside the classroom, model learning spaces).

Student showcase highlights 5 students who developed short videos on "what is your ideal education".  Sponsored by Apple.

Grad students in the San Antonio Instructional Tech program will be interviewing conference attendees on the topic of the 'ideal education'.

Refelct, Connect, Contextualize: Become a Citizen Journalist!  Five ELI members will be citizen journalists and documenting the conference from the ground up.  They will create a 5 minute video to be shown Wednesday morning.
