Podcast: Using Second Life for Immersive LearningCreated by Gerry Bayne (EDUCAUSE) on August 22, 2007
In this 14 minute podcast, we feature an interview with Cynthia Calongne, Professor of Computer Science at Colorado Technical University. She presented two sessions at the 2007 Seminars On Academic Computing Conference entitled, "Beyond Course Management Systems: Second Life" and "Using Second Life". Second Life lets students and instructors meet and collaborate to work on projects and exchange information. The immersive environment is helpful for many teaching concepts and collaborative learning. In this discussion we find out how Second Life is being used in higher education as well as with K-12 students. This podcast was edited with help from Kelly Walker. |
I have heard a lot of stuff about second life lately and mostly it's negative about how it's not really being used for commercial purposes and companies have lost millions on it. I also heard that the places that are actually used in Second life are porn related. Wouldn't it be better if someone created a virtual environment that was specifically for educational purposes versus using a social networking environment?
