A Role for Librarians in Curating Scientific Data - A Short Reading List, Addendum

Thanks to Robert McDonald for convening our session and to all who attended and participated. Below is a short, selected reading list for those who are new to the topic and would like more background on issues related to data-driven science and data curation.

National Science Board. September 2005. "Long-Lived Data Collections: Enabling Research and Education in the 21st Century."

Microsoft Research. March 2006. "Towards 2020 Science."

Association of Research Libraries. September 2006. "To Stand the Test of Time: Long-Term Stewardship of Digital Datasets in Science and Engineering."

NSF and JISC Repositories Workshop. September 2007. "The Future of Scholarly Communication: Building the Infrastructure for Cyberscholarship."

There are many, many other good sources of information in the literature, but this should be a good start for those who are new to the topic.

Session: A Role For Librarians in Curating Scientific Data
Presenters: G. Sayeed Choudhury (Johns Hopkins) and Michael Witt (Purdue)

Abstract: In this session, presenters from two research-extensive universities will advocate a role for librarians in addressing the impending "data deluge" and the emerging need of researchers for help in describing, preserving, and providing access to their data. Activities taking place on their campuses to meet these needs will also be discussed.

NSF Posts DataNet Solicitation

NSF today has posted a new funding track in their Office of Cyberinfrastructure entitled Sustainable Digital Data Preservation and Access Network Partners (DataNet) - http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2007/nsf07601/nsf07601.htm

The goal of the program is to:

Science and engineering research and education are increasingly digital and increasingly data-intensive. Digital data are not only the output of research but provide input to new hypotheses, enabling new scientific insights and driving innovation. Therein lies one of the major challenges of this scientific generation: how to develop the new methods, management structures and technologies to manage the diversity, size, and complexity of current and future data sets and data streams. This solicitation addresses that challenge by creating a set of exemplar national and global data research infrastructure organizations (dubbed DataNet Partners) that provide unique opportunities to communities of researchers to advance science and/or engineering research and learning.

Podcast: Privacy and Security in Higher Education: Filling the Policy Vacuum

In this hour and ten minute long podcast from the 2007 Seminars on Academic Computing, we hear from Fred H. Cate, Distinguished Professor at the School of Law and Director of the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research at Indiana University, with a speech entitled, Privacy and Security in Higher Education: Filling the Policy Vacuum .

Colleges and universities possess an exceptional volume and variety of personal information. Our stewardship of such information has been inconsistent and inadequate, and we often implement new technologies and systems without considering systemic privacy and security implications. Although many publicly reported security breaches occur on campuses, we have been slow to provide training in privacy and security issues, rarely audit for compliance, and lag far behind industry and government in appointing privacy and security officers. This session will address the information policy challenges facing colleges and universities, today and in the future, and will offer practical steps for overcoming them.

In this podcast, we feature a 6 minute interview with Terri-Lynn B. Thayer, Acting Vice President of Computing and Information Services at Brown University. Thayer presented a session entitled "Data Center Health Check" at the EDUCAUSE 2007 Enterprise Conference.

Our data centers are aging. Our services are expected to be running 24 x 7, and the risk of disasters has led us to consider secondary data centers. This session will address key considerations to evaluate your data center’s health and to prepare for increased demands. Topics will include significant power, cooling, space, and fire protection considerations, as well as site selection and machine-room layout.
