Learning Landscape Project highlighted in report on widening access to higher education

At CARET, we're proud that the Learning Landscape Project has been highlighted in a recent report on widening participation in higher education, from the Von Hügel Institute at St Edmund’s College. Written by Michael Watts, David Bridges and Jonathan Eames, the report is titled “Widening Participation and Encounters with the Pedagogies of Higher Education” (2008), and was produced with funding from Aimhigher. Aimhigher is a national-level, government-funded education programme, run by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), with support from the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS).

The report seeks to highlight case studies and examples of good practice in pedagogy and support for student learning, in the context of improving access to higher education for all. The Learning Landscape Project was one of a range of pedagogic initiatives highlighted at Cambridge, with the Learning and Teaching Support Initiative and the Teaching for Learning network (TfLN) (two projects that we enjoy good relationships /connections with) also mentioned.

The report is available to read online at the Centre for Educational Research and Development at the Von Hügel Institute.

ELI Annual Video: Connectivism

Video and slides for this presentation can be found here. The speech is by George Siemens, Associate Director of the Learning Technologies Centre at the University of Manitoba. This plenary session is entitled, "Connectivism".

The waves of technological and social change have eroded the effectiveness of traditional views regarding what, how, and why to educate. To effectively educate learners, fundamental assertions need to be rethought: the design of schools and curriculum, the nature of knowledge in a connected world, the relationship between educator and learner, the means and methods of authenticating information and knowledge, and, perhaps most significantly, what it means “to know” in complex, rapidly developing, and chaotic environments. This session will present connectivism as a theory of learning that can bridge the rift between traditional and new educational approaches to prepare learners for the tomorrow they will inherit.

An Interview with Doris Kearns Goodwin

In this nine minute recording, we'll hear from Pulitzer prize winning author and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin. Listen in as she shares some poignant thoughts on the leadership that may prove especially relevant to institutions ripe with diversity such as those we find in higher education. She'll also comment on the prospects of Lincoln and Eleanor Roosevelt as bloggers in the 21st century, digital preservation, and the shares some thoughts on baseball. As an avid Red Sox fan, I'm sure she's thrilled with the outcome of the recent World Series and her comments regarding the momentum of the Red Sox were spot on.

Podcast: Information Literacy, IT Fluency, and Media Literacy - An Interview with Craig Gibson

In this podcast, we feature 15 minute interview with Craig Gibson, Associate University Librarian at George Mason University. This interview was recorded at the ELI 2007 Fall Focus Session in Boulder, Colorado, where Mr. Gibson presented a speech entitled, "Prisms Around Student Learning: Information Literacy, IT Fluency, and Media Literacy". A podcast of that speech can be found here.

The family of literacies now promoted in higher education (information literacy, IT fluency, and media and visual literacies) continues to multiply. These educational agendas call for more pervasive collaboration among all stakeholders (faculty, administrators, librarians, technologists, student life staff, assessment specialists, and others) because of conceptual and programmatic linkages and convergences among them. The blending of these literacies can become a catalyst that taps into student learning and engagement at a deep level and effects cultural change within and across institutions.

This podcast was edited with assistance from Kelly Walker.
