From May 31 to June 11, 2009, participants will gather at Emory University for an intensive residential experience that exposes them to higher education leaders and luminaries from around the country. A significant amount of personal and professional growth results from the networking and group exercises that bring a diverse set of international participants together to share, explore, and learn. Presentations are intermixed with case studies, brainstorming, role-playing, problem solving, and reflection. In November of 2006, Brian Hawkins, EDUCAUSE President, announced his plans to retire from the presidency of EDUCAUSE at the end of the 2007•2008 academic year. At the 2007 EDUCAUSE Annual Conference, he was asked to share the important lessons he has learned in his nearly 40-year career in higher education regarding management, leadership, and professional life. In this 42-minute podcast of that address, entitled "Learning To Drive (and Other Lessons Learned Along the Way)", he discusses issues including personnel management, professional development, and how to map a course for good leadership and a successful career.

Part of my responsibilities at EDUCAUSE include oversight of our programs in IT Management and Leadership development. Early in March, EDUCAUSE's Professional Development advisory committee will be meeting to review, among other things, the kinds of management and leadership development programming and resources that EDUCAUSE offers, and to discuss the needs of our community. The committee will make recommendations to the association about future EDUCAUSE efforts in this area.
I am anxious to hear from members of our higher ed IT community about what kinds of professional development opportunities you think are important, in particular in the area of developing new managers and leaders.
