On this podcast we feature a session from the 2007 EDUCAUSE Annual Conference. The session, Defining the Digital Commons: Abstraction of Enterprise Services and Policies Through the Use of a Unified Web-Based User Interface, discusses a methodology for abstracting enterprise services and the policies that dictate them through the use of a Web-based user interface. This 55 minute podcast features a keynote address from the EDUCAUSE 2008 Enterprise Conference. The speech, "The "Greening" of Information Technology," is by EDUCAUSE President and CEO, Diana Oblinger.

The environment is the largest enterprise system of all, and one that is impacted by information technology. As "green" initiatives and sustainability become a greater part of our consciousness, "green computing" will receive increasing focus in higher education. This presentation explores sustainability, energy use, and "reduce, reuse, and recycle" programs.

In this 14 minute podcast, we feature an interview with Steve Wheat and Tod Jackson, both Enterprise Architects for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Co-Founders of the OpenEAI Project.

The purpose of the OpenEAI Project is to discover and document the controlling dynamics, principles, and practices of enterprise application integration and to present, implement, and promote those findings. The OpenEAI Project presents findings in the form of the OpenEAI methodology and OpenEAI software for implementing integrations. We suggest you read the OpenEAI Overview for additional background on enterprise application integration (EAI). The OpenEAI Project is comprised of six distinct, but closely-related departments, which address OpenEAI Methodology, Application Foundation APIs, Message Object API, Message Definitions, Reference Implementations, and Deployment and Administration.

Enterprise 2008: Call for Proposals Now Open; Deadline is January 14

The call for proposals is now open for the Enterprise Information and Technology Conference 2008, a small-scale event ideal for making contacts with peers, engaging in discussion, and discovering new strategies and solutions for dealing with challenges facing those involved in administrative and enterprise information systems and their related technologies. The conference will be held May 28–29 in Chicago, Illinois. The program will follow these tracks:

  • Demonstrating the Increasing Value of IT
  • Infrastructure Evolution
  • Services Evolution
  • Systems Evolution

Submit a presentation proposal. The deadline for submissions is January 14, 2008.

Podcast: Robert J. Lowden on Virtualization

Gartner estimates that 90 percent of Fortune 1000 companies will use virtualization by 2008. As higher education IT organizations adopt this technology, a variety of strategic decisions must be applied to the challenges of P2V—transitioning from physical to virtual—across the enterprise.

In this 11 minute podcast, we feature an interview with Robert J. Lowden, Director of University Information Systems at Indiana University. His presentation at the EDUCAUSE 2007 Enterprise Conference is entitled, "Virtualization Across the Enterprise". In this interview, Mr. Lowden shares experiences, challenges, and strategies of implementing a virtual approach to storage and processing.

2007 Enterprise Conference: The Adaptable University

This podcast features a keynote address from the 2007 Enterprise Conference in Chicago, Illinois. Our speaker is H. David Lambert, Vice President for Information Services and Chief Information Officer at Georgetown University. His speech is titled “The Adaptable University” and runs approximately 53 minutes.

Institutions of higher education have become increasingly concerned about their ability to maintain critical services to faculty, students, and staff in the event of a major disruption. As we build or buy new information systems, enhance new facilities, and design new programs, we must be concerned with business continuity and creating resilient, adaptable institutions that consider academic sustainability in every aspect of the enterprise.
