EDUCAUSE Joins Coalition Supporting Access to an Open Internet

In efforts to support a "fast, affordable and open" Internet, EDUCAUSE recently joined forces in creating and promoting InternetforEveryone.org. This coalition, which consists of public interest organizations, industry groups, and concerned citizens, is devoted to the notion that citizens should have access to an open Internet. The official launch date for the campaign was June 24.

With statistics showing that the United States has fallen to 15th in terms of broadband penetration (down from its 4th place ranking in 2001), members say there is a pressing need for a national broadband policy. Specifically, the coalition at InternetforEveryone.org says "every American must be connected to a fast, affordable and open Internet to serve as an active citzen in a 21st century democracy and to prosper in today's economy. High-speed Internet is no longer a luxury; it's a lifeline for all Americans. Our broad alliance is working together to see that our nation's leaders adopt a national plan to bring open, high-speed Internet connections into every home, at a price all of us can afford."

The group stands for four basic principles: ACCESS (for every home and business), CHOICE (competitive choice with lower prices and faster speeds), OPENNESS (Right to freedom of speech and commerce online in an open market without gatekeepers or discrimination), and INNOVATION (Internet must continue to create jobs and foster economic growth). By coming together as one, the group is hopeful that it will be even more effective in promoting broadband policies when it brings the initiative to federal, state, and local representatives.

The diverse coalition includes Google, YouTube, Internet2, eBay, the ACLU, BitTorrent, Public Knowledge, and the Writers Guild of America (East and West branches), among others. Additionally, individual members include Larry Lessig and Barbara van Schewick at Stanford Law School, Yochai Benker at Harvard Law School, Jack Balkin at Yale Law School, and Jonathan Zittrain at the Harvard Berkman Center for Internet and Society.

FireEye Joins Internet2 to Participate in High-Performance Network Security and Malware Analysis Initiatives

FireEye, Inc., a leader in global anti-botnet protection, announced that it has joined Internet2 as a corporate member. FireEye plans to collaborate with the Internet2 community on advanced network security projects involving high-performance network security and next- generation malware analysis In addition, FireEye and Internet2 will host a joint webinar titled "Botnet Incident Response" on April 2, 2008. FireEye's chief security content officer Dr. Fengmin Gong will also present "Scaling Security Analysis vs. Next-Gen Botnet Malware Using VM-Based Analysis" at the Spring Internet2 Member Meeting on April 21-23 in Arlington, Va. Harold Stonebraker, a security investigator at FireEye, will present "Incident Response and Network Forensics: Avoiding Common IR Errors".

While emerging network technologies will be used by legitimate organizations to drive innovation, they may also be exploited by criminals and their botnets to conduct illicit activities. As such, FireEye continues to advance its anti-botnet security technologies for the next-generation Internet. As a corporate member of Internet2, FireEye will collaborate with higher education institutions and researchers to investigate how anti-botnet protections can be incorporated into the design of next-generation Internet technologies.

EDUCAUSE and Internet2 Receive NSF Grant to Develop Collaboration Tools

National Cyber Security Awareness Month Resources Available

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). A variety of resources are available from the EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Computer and Network Security Task Force, including a NCSAM resource kit and winning entries for the 2007 Computer Security Awareness Video Contest, which can be used for planning activities on campus to increase cyber security awareness among your students, faculty, and staff.

Winners of Student Computer Security Video Contest Announced

The EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Computer and Network Security Task Force, the National Cyber Security Alliance, and ResearchChannel are pleased to announce the winning entries for the 2007 Computer Security Awareness Video Contest conducted by the Security Task Force to raise awareness of and increase computer security at colleges and universities.

The contest sought videos that explain computer security problems and specific actions that college and university students can take to safeguard their computers or personal information, and had two categories of videos: two-minute-or-less training or instructional videos, and 30-second public service announcements. The videos can be used in campus security awareness campaigns during student orientation and throughout the year. View or download the winning videos, as well as those receiving honorable mention.

EDUCAUSE and Internet2 Support the Advanced Information and Communications Technology Research Act

EDUCAUSE and Internet2 have announced their support for the Advanced Information and Communications Technology Research Act introduced today by Senator Daniel K. Inouye (D-Hawaii), chairman of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee. The introduction of this bill brings attention to the need for renewed investment in long-term research aimed at making advanced communications services available to and affordable for all Americans. New Managers Training and Data Security--Two Seminars Coming in June

The EDUCAUSE Seminars program, led by expert members of the higher education IT community and EDUCAUSE staff, presents an opportunity to spend a full day exploring one of various important topics in higher education IT, with the convenience of close location, low cost, and minimal time commitment.

The two EDUCAUSE Seminars detailed below will be held concurrently in Columbia, South Carolina, on June 4, 2007, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Those registering for a seminar may wish to forward this message to colleagues who are interested in the seminar topics, so a campus group can attend together.

Survival Training for New Managers

Among the steps to protect sensitive data include implementing an information security risk management program, data-classification policies, awareness programs, and technology solutions, as well as clearly defining roles and responsibilities.

EDUCAUSE Offers Michigan Seminar on Higher Ed Data Security and Privacy Issues (UPDATED)

In this one-day seminar, “A Blueprint for Handling Sensitive Data: Security, Privacy, and Other Considerations,” on May 2, 2007, keynote speakers (UPDATED) Rodney J. Petersen, Government Relations Officer and Security Task Force Coordinator, EDUCAUSE, and David Escalante, Director of Computer Policy & Security, Boston College, will outline a blueprint for protecting sensitive data according to the EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Computer and Network Security Task Force. The seminar will be held at Michigan State University in East Lansing. A recent study by the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) found that campus security incidents compromised personal information, leading to bad publicity and the potential for identity theft. This seminar will address the steps necessary to protect sensitive data, which include implementing an information security risk management program, data-classification policies, awareness programs, and technology solutions, as well as clearly defining roles and responsibilities.

EDUCAUSE and Internet2 Support Bi-Partisan Legislation to Protect the Open Internet

EDUCAUSE and Internet2 have announced their support for the "Internet Freedom Preservation Act," introduced today by Senator Olympia Snowe (R -ME) and Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and co-sponsored by Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA), John Kerry (D-MA), Tom Harkin (D-IA), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), and Barack Obama (D-IL). The bill provides a bi-partisan solution preventing phone and cable companies from manipulating the performance and architecture of the Internet.
