EDUCAUSE Website Upgrade: New Features Facilitate Better Content Delivery

Recently, EDUCAUSE completed a website infrastructure upgrade that will provide and maintain better content delivery services for members.

New and updated features

Profile management system

You can add interests which are viewable/filterable in the peer directory.
You have more control over how your personal information is displayed.
Any changes you make to your title, address, phone, and email address are immediately visible in your profile.

Affinity finder/peer directory

Find people by browsing a tag cloud of interests or geographic location, and add more interest or location tags to refine results.
Search filters help you find the people you're looking for. Example: searching for "smith"

Member directory

Updated view of people on campus who are participating with EDUCAUSE. Example: University of Chicago

This podcast features an interview with George B. Adams III, Associate Director for Programs, Network for Computational Nanotechnology at Purdue University. Our interview was recorded at the CNI 2008 Spring Task Force Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

nanoHUB provides users with “fingertip access” to over 70 simulation tools for research and education. Users not only launch jobs that are executed on the state-of-the-art computational facilities of Open Science Grid and TeraGrid, but also interactively visualize and analyze the results--all via an ordinary Web browser. nanoHUB middleware hides the complexity of Grid computing, handling authentication, authorization, file transfer, and visualization, and letting the researcher focus on research. This approach also helps educators bring these tools to the classroom, letting them bypass the difficulties of Grid computing and focus instead on learning science and engineering.

Taking Mapping to the Next Level

We all know geographic information such as found on Google maps is the hottest thing since the invention of the spy satellite. And we know that even if you get directions to an address, it's nice to see what your destination looks like before showing up at the door.

A9.com, Amazon's stab at the search market adds a new ingredient to the mapping mix; street-level photos of your location. Since this is relatively recent, only major cities & locations are included thus far, but it is a quite impressive collection even in this beta stage (at least for us in the states).

For example, need a refresher on Times Square in NYC?

While the photos are currently limited to major streets, a tie in with Flickr or some other photo sharing site could easily be established to allow user-created content for each location. Perhaps something along the lines of Mappr.com, which shows a USA state level map of photo locations, but at a street level iteration.
