Security is Number One IT Issue According to 2008 Current Issues Survey Report

EDUCAUSE has published the results of the 2008 Current Issues Survey, and this year Security edged out Funding IT as the top strategic challenge.

The latest EDUCAUSE Quarterly article, "Current Issues Survey Report, 2008", states:

It is no wonder that IT security has again emerged as the top strategic issue for colleges and universities given the increasing amount of critical data and new services that are available electronically and need to be protected. The persistence of security incidents and reported data breaches, and a growing number of compliance requirements including security-related state and federal regulations and contractual obligations, make this a central and acute concern of all IT organizations, no matter their institutions' sizes and missions. College and university personnel have a daunting task to ensure the security of information resources while operating within a culture of openness and decentralization. In addition, the changing nature of the threats continues to challenge IT organizations.

The article goes on to suggest security issues that institutions need to address. Security-related resources are available as part of the 2008 Current Issues Resources.

2008 Top-Ten IT Issues in Higher Education

EDUCAUSE has published the results of the 2008 Current Issues Survey, which gathered responses from 589 primary representatives of EDUCAUSE member institutions, in the new issue of EDUCAUSE Quarterly, as well as a summary version in the latest EDUCAUSE Review. The articles identify the issues that IT leaders in higher education see as their most critical challenges. Which IT issues have the greatest strategic importance to higher education institutions today and which ones are likely to be important in the future? Find answers to these questions and learn about other current trends in the 2007 EDUCAUSE Current IT Issues Survey report, published in the current issue of EDUCAUSE Quarterly.

The 2007 survey gathered responses from 591 primary representatives (typcially CIOs) of EDUCAUSE member institutions, representing public and private and associate- through doctorate-granting institutions of all sizes.

Among this year's key findings:

Funding IT re-emerges as a top challenge.
Security and identity/access management split as separate issues.
Course/learning management systems move into the top ten for the first time.
Among issues expected to be more significant in the future, portals drop in rank from fifth to ninth.

The report is accompanied by a collection of helpful resources on the top issues.
