CNI Podcast: The Digital Scholarship Lab - Experiments in Twenty-First Century Research and Teaching

This twenty minute podcast features an interview with Andrew Torget, Director of the Digital Scholarship Lab at the University of Richmond. It was recorded at the Coalition for Networked Information Fall 2008 Task Force Meeting.

The Digital Scholarship Lab is a center for innovation, bringing together scholars, technologists, and the public in order to explore how emerging technology can change the ways we understand the human past, present, and future. Two of the projects discussed in this interview include “Voting America” and the “History Engine.” Both projects experiment with what the future of teaching and research might be in the digital age. “Voting America” employs visualizations and cinematic techniques to make a massive amount of data--the 1.6 billion votes that have been cast in presidential elections during the last 164 years--more accessible to students of history and politics. The “History Engine” captures the research of undergraduate students and aggregates their work to produce a very detailed, very large resource about the American past, one that is valuable both to students within the classroom and to a larger public. Both projects are designed to model how colleges and universities might seize new opportunities and meet the challenges presented by digitized resources and digital techniques.

This 22 minute podcast features a conversation with Veronica Diaz, Instructional Technology Manager for the Maricopa Community College District and Laura Blankenship, Senior Instructional Technologist at Bryn Mawr College. This discussion was recorded at the ELI 2008 Annual Meeting where both presented sessions. Veronica Diaz co-presented a session entitled, "Your 2.0 Life: Models and Methods to Meet Learners' Needs in a Technological Age". Laura Blankenship co-presented a session entitled, "Who's Afraid of Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and the Big Bad CMS? A Digi-Drama About Fear 2.0".

The topic is Instructional Technologies. What are the attitudes of instructors and students toward new technologies in the classroom? How can we best integrate Web 2.0 tools into course planning?

Our conversation participants are Louise Thorpe, Head of Academic Innovation at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK; and Holly Morris-Kuentz, Director of Instructional and Research Technology for Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Both of the them also co-presented sessions at the ELI 2008 Annual Meeting. In this 14 minute podcast we feature an interview I did with Louis Molina, Professor of English at Miami Dade College. Professor Molina presented a session at the EDUCAUSE Southeast Regional Conference called "Using iPods to Enhance Learning Across the Curriculum".

Louis Molina taught two English Composition classes using the same curricula, and the same course objectives. One class was given iPods to keep class notes, assignments, supplemental information, and syllabus. The non-iPod class used traditional handouts, notes, and the Internet.
