In this fifteen minute podcast, we feature an interview with Cedric Bennett, Emeritus Director for Information Security Services at Stanford University. Mr. Bennett also serves on the EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Computer and Network Security Task Force. We interviewed him at the EDUCAUSE 2007 Annual Conference in Seattle, Washington, where he was presenting a session entitled, "Stop, Drop, and Roll: Prevent and Douse Cyber Incidents".

Today's IT leaders face multiple challenges united by a common thread: determining when to provide custom IT services for students, when to facilitate their use of external IT services, and when to simply get out of students' way.

A decade ago students accessed the Internet through the school's modem pool. Today, they make their own selection from an array of broadband services. What's the future for e-mail and services like IM and personal Web pages? Students are increasingly arriving on campus with extensive experience with existing products, and many are choosing to forward their school e-mail to outside providers. Should we attempt to stem or embrace this trend? Two of the largest undergraduate schools at Penn decided to work with Microsoft to offer students hosted e-mail and communications services in the upcoming school year. In this free September 19 EDUCAUSE Live! Web seminar, Exploring Student Communications Services for the 21st Century, Ira Winston and Deirdre Woods, University of Pennsylvania, and Walter Harp, Microsoft, will discuss how the schools are approaching this issue, the advantages it offers students and others, and elements critical to the initiative's success.

In this 14 minute podcast, we feature an interview with O'Neal Smitherman, Vice President for Information Technology at Ball State University, from the 2007 Seminars On Academic Computing conference. Ball State University has partnered with Microsoft to bring a number of services and upgrades to their computing services. Mr. Smitherman discusses how Ball State approached this succesful partnership, some of the challenges a university faces in partnering with a vendor, and how to assess if a partnership is right for your institution.

O'Neal Smitherman was part of a collaborative session at the 2007 Seminars On Academic Computing entitled, "Outsourcing for Student Collaborative Services".

Commoditization of Core Services: An Interview with Brian Voss and Cynthia Hadden

This 13 minute podcast features an interview with CIO Brian Voss and Deputy CIO and Executive Director, UIS, Cynthia Hadden, both from Louisiana State University. They presented a session at the 2007 EDUCAUSE Enterprise Conference entitled, "Commoditization of Core Services".

Given increasing pressures to do more with less, institutions are beginning to look at outsourcing core services to improve quality of service while significantly reducing costs. Louisiana State University has been very successful in outsourcing basic e-mail, one of the most fundamental technology tools in use today.

Increasingly campuses are considering outsourcing commodity IT services such as e-mail, instant messaging, and calendaring, either for students or for the entire institution. One of the most widely discussed options is Google Apps for Education, and the listservs are abuzz with strong feelings on all sides. In this free June 19 EDUCAUSE Live! Web seminar, “Outsourcing E-mail and Other Commodity Services,” hear from Jeff Keltner, Enterprise Specialist for Collaboration Products at Google, about the Google offering, and Wendy Woodward, Director, Technology Support Services at Northwestern University, which recently selected Google’s solution after a lengthy and intense investigation of alternatives. 2007 Policy Conference: Year In Review

The 2007 Policy Conference kicked off with a top-ten style list of Policy Issues currently facing higher education. This entertaining and insightful list was compiled and delivered by Tracy Mitrano, Director of IT Policy and Computer Policy and Law Program at Cornell University. What's past is prologue. As we look ahead to the policy questions facing the Internet today and tomorrow, it's useful to recall what we've seen over the past 12 months. This speech, entitled the Year In Review, runs approximately 33 minutes.
