Flickering (or is that Flickring?)

I teach a survey of art history class. I use digital images in the classroom and online. While I have several thousand of my own images, my collection is far from comprehensive in chronology and in geography. Arkansas State University twice purchased digital images under a contract with Saskia and others that places severe restrictions on where and how the images may be used (they may be seen only by faculty and students of the university under a secure sign-in system).

I discovered that Flickr has a large store of digital images that may be used for educational purposes. Of these hundreds deal with art and architecture (mostly architecture and sculpture, but with some surprisingly good images of paintings). I never prepare a presentation for my students without checking the holdings of Flickr. Additionally, when I find a particularly good source of images, I bookmark it in del.icio.us so that I may quickly find the collections (under imagearchive) and also share what I have found with others.

The image resources on the web, especially those that offer material unrestricted or under a Creative Commons license.

Hanzo:Web -- An interesting social bookmarking tool

When I asked Brewster Kahle about the potential for integrating social bookmarking into the Internet Archive, I envisioned a service that would provide a social, human element to the archive. One that took snapshots of sites as users found them of interest ... one that would provide an archive of content that was closer to the cultural experience that caught that person's interest. Well, in the last session that I attended at ETECH, I sat through a presentation from the folks at Hanzo:Web ... a service that very closely resembles what I was thinking about. It has a very nice interface (and the new version will be even better). If I remember correctly, Clay Shirky suggested that services like these provided a mechanism for tapping into the demand-side economics of user attention. A interesting take.

I wondered about the potential for archiving the actual web page that the user was viewing ... rather than the source from a robot that didn't included a user's unique experience and view of content ... an archive that displayed a rendered web page complete with all the greasemonkey mods and personalized view of content that wouldn't be available from a robot's view of content. In other words, take the content rendered on the screen and archive it. We're not there yet, but I think it will be interesting to see what happens when/if we do get there.

I also wonder about the potential role of services like the Coral CDN and wonder if a derivative of something like this might be interesting in a library and/or academic circle for both archiving and performance.
Stumbling Around Stumble Upon

“Extensions are small add-ons that add new functionality to Firefox. They can add anything from a toolbar button to a completely new feature. They allow the application to be customized to fit the personal needs of each user if they need additional features, while keeping Firefox small to download.” I’m playing with many of these extensions and honestly feel overwhelmed - do I really want to change the appearance of Firefox? Do I need a “purple bunny” to help me read and write comments about a web page? Adblock makes sense, but what about managing user scripts with “Greasemonkey?” I don’t even know what a user script is! I’m looking for a “fresh outlook” so I hope StumpleUpon will help me out! Mostly I want to understand how that little yellow floating planel at the left hand top of any web page with an RSS feed works. I experimented with a bunch of RSS feeds and I like this the best, but can’t even figure out from where I acquired it. Yeeks.

Furl Screencast - "How to" Tutorial

After reviewing an excellent Del.icio.us screencast at
http://grail.oise.utoronto.ca/journal/wfreeman/archives/2005/11/getting_into_de.html ,
I decided that I should provide the TripleAlecture Project Team with some guidance about using FURL - a social bookmarking tool that is very similar to del.icio.us . You can find my FURL screencast here: http://www.newmediaworkshops.com/tripleAlecture/furl/furl.html - It's 6 minutes long and a little sing-songy... gotta work on that!

I have a FURL topic area "TripleALecture" for all the resources I have discovered that I feel will helpful for our project - These links are public and can be viewed here:

http://www.furl.net/members/sl_info?enc=UTF-8&search=browse&sort=&dir=&pos=&keyword=&category=399129&date=0

Why the Internet Archive should get into social bookmarking

Earlier today, I added a bookmark to my social bookmark service of choice. Among other things, I saved a cached copy of it onto the service. Then, I reflected a bit on my conversation with Cliff Lynch last week. I couldn't help but think about the cultural record that we're leaving behind. I thought about privacy. I thought about circulation statistics and the inferences that one might make from a book mark as compared to a page view. I also thought about all the commercial social networking players out there (and their acquistion by even larger players). It seems like the Internet Archive is uiquely positioned as an organization that I could not only trust with my data but also someone that could reap from the benefits of lots of users selectively caching individual pages that their robots might be missing. I dunno. It just hit me and I thought I'd share my $.02

Does anyone else see this as an interesting prospect?
