OpenID is a user-centric technology which allows a person to have control over how their Identity is both managed and used online. By being decentralised there is no single server with which every OpenID-enabled service and every user must register. In an effort to enable greater synergy and collaboration among its institutions and better serve their broad constituencies, The University of Texas System (UT System) set out in 2004 to create a core resource consortium of middleware-leveraged resource providers - a project which has matured and is now the UT System Federation. This document is a compilation of the five case studies, each set in a unique environment, the UT System completed as part of their exploration and implementation of middleware and the federated infrastructure model.

Four case studies were undertaken in the course of this project with partial funding from an Extending the Reach (ETR) grant from the National Science Foundation Middleware Initiative-Enterprise and Desktop Integration Technologies (NMI-EDIT) Consortium. Last fall, someone taking advantage of a common method for gaining access to online databases attempted to download the vast collection of scholarly journals known as JSTOR. Now the owners of JSTOR are experimenting with new software developed by Internet2 researchers to prevent such incidents by improving online authentication.
