Abstract:

This case study investigates how two major New York City universities, Pace University and New York University, changed their business continuity, disaster recovery, and emergency response thinking and practices after experiencing a major emergency. Researchers conducted this in-depth case study to complement the 2007 ECAR study, Shelter from the Storm: IT and Business Continuity in Higher Education, which provides higher education with empirical information about where its business continuity vulnerabilities, plans, and practices stand in relation to surveyed institutions, and what factors are associated with success in planning for the delivery of information technology–dependent business services following a spectrum of potential service disruptions. Senior IT administrators at 340 colleges and universities completed the quantitative survey that informed the study.

Abstract:

Researchers conducted this in-depth case study to complement the 2007 ECAR study, Shelter from the Storm: IT and Business Continuity in Higher Education, which provides higher education with empirical information about where its business continuity vulnerabilities, plans, and practices stand in relation to surveyed institutions, and what factors are associated with success in planning for the delivery of information technology-dependent business services following a spectrum of potential service disruptions. Senior IT administrators at 340 colleges and universities completed the quantitative survey that informed the study. This case study examines how one institution, Florida State University, uses high-speed networking to deliver disaster recovery and business continuity services from a remote site.

This case study examines how risk assessment and business impact analysis initiatives emerged and are moving to completion at UCLA, one of the largest and technologically most complex institutions in US higher education. As a complement to ECAR's core study about IT Engagement in Research, this case study examines Princeton University's institutional research computational facility, which is developed and funded collaborative by its Office of Information Technology, university organizations, and individual faculty members. It explores the critical elements involved in creating a collaborative environment for research computation as well as the organizational structures that foster synergy between computational research and information technology infrastructure.

Abstract:

In higher education, team-based, collaborative research activities, call for new modalities and methods of investigation. Calit2 is responding to this challenge by creating a next-generation research environment that includes a range of technical and nontechnical systems to foster large-scale, multidisciplinary collaborations in innovative ways. This case study explores the breadth and depth of this extensive initiative, including how Calit2 is experimenting with multiple technological methodologies to support locally based, distributed, and virtual research collaborations.

Abstract:

This multi-part case study examines three higher education examples of collaborations on shared IT services. It focuses on the New England Research and Education Network (NEREN) and a consortium of institutions in Massachusetts that is collaborating on regional networking; an Ohio based initiative led by the University of Cincinnati to provide course management systems to other educational entities in Ohio; and Drexel University as an application service provider to other institutions.
