Enterprise WAN Capacity Planning

Capacity planning or capacity management isn't just for networks anymore. In fact, while enterprise wide area networks (WANs) were once only optimized for transaction processing, it is now harder to find an enterprise WAN that hasn't been optimized in multiple ways to carry voice and video, Internet, and some mission-critical application that replaced a mainframe transaction system. With all of the new and interesting traffic types floating around in the WAN, it's a wonder anyone can keep things straight. Even Internet backbones, which should be application agnostic, are throttling certain applications to protect their own infrastructures. WAN capacity planning must evolve from an effort that network architects undertook alone into an effort that involves coordination among multiple infrastructure groups inside IT.

Links to documents within this file might require secure access to restricted Web sites.

Burton Group (www.burtongroup.com) provides technically in-depth research and advisory services for colleges and universities, government agencies, and commercial enterprises. Burton Group's practical and unbiased research and advice helps technologists make smart IT infrastructure decisions in increasingly complex environments. Burton Group covers directories, identity management, application platforms, architecture, and network and telecom infrastructure topics. Like ECAR, Burton Group is an unbiased advocate for the user and more than 80% of Burton Group's clients are user organizations rather than suppliers. EDUCAUSE member institutions can become users of Burton Group research services through EDUCAUSE pricing. Burton Group is an ECAR partner and can be contacted by email at slesueur@burtongroup.com or by telephone (801-373-5767).

Information Technology Networking in Higher Education: Campus Commodity and Competitive Differentiator

This ECAR research study is designed to illuminate a host of current network management practices related to IT in higher education; opportunities for connectivity to external networks; the institutional context of organization, leadership, and management; current and emerging technologies and converged networks; and the future of networking. The study is based on five major research initiatives: a literature review; consultation with the EDUCAUSE Net@EDU Integrated Communications Solutions Working Group; survey responses from 517 chief information officers and network directors in higher education; qualitative interviews with 12 higher education leaders about their view of the future of IT networking in higher education; and three in-depth cases studies involving four U.S. institutions and SURF, a Dutch higher education and research partnership.

The Impact of Globalization on Campus Networks

This research bulletin discusses the rationale for developing a long-term, sustainable, institution-wide strategy for campus networks and the technologies that connect institutions to the Internet. It articulates the primary elements to consider in developing that strategy, provides two models for framing such a strategy, and argues why doing so is critically important to the institution's survival and advancement in an era of globalization.

Choosing the Right Wireless Network: A Technology Challenge for Higher Education

As wireless network technologies and standards change, institutions face decisions about acquiring and upgrading their wireless networks. This Research Bulletin examines competing wireless technologies, detailing the advantages and disadvantages associated with each. The top issue related to wireless technology, security, is also reviewed. This Research Bulletin examines the implementation of wireless networks, which will help institutions set reasonable objectives for their own wireless network rollouts.
