Presentation at the Sixth Annual ECAR Symposium, December 5-7, 2007, in Boca Raton, Florida. What are the essential skills for an IT leader? How do rising IT leaders perceive the CIO role, and are we doing enough to cultivate them? Are generational differences and demographics reshaping the IT workforce? This session presents preliminary findings from ECAR's research of IT leadership and workforce, including data from a 2007 survey of higher education IT leaders and IT professionals.

The Economic Development Case for Investment in Higher Education Information Technology

With the Indiana Pervasive Computing Research Initiative as a case study, this research bulletin explores how investments in higher education information technology research can drive community and regional economic development. It explores underlying principles, such as workforce development, training, and retention, that are mutually advantageous to the institution and to the local economy, as well as how these principles can be applied to spur investments in higher education IT efforts.
