Bridging the Divide: Combining Faculty Centers and Instructional Support

This research bulletin explores a new approach to faculty support for technology. The University of North Carolina Charlotte has combined a teaching center with instructional technology support into a single support unit that reports to the central information technology (IT) organization. The bulletin discusses the significant challenges in organizational behavior, socialization, communication, and priorities against a backdrop of the opportunities to overcome many of the real and perceived barriers that characterize the relationships between central IT organizations and support units for faculty in their roles as instructors.

Informatics and Knowledge Management for Faculty Research Data

This research bulletin describes the results of a study conducted at the University of California, Santa Barbara, into systems and project requirements for informatics in a broad range of scientific fields (including, but not limited to, bioscience fields), along with requirements in the social sciences and humanities. Faculty were interviewed about what has led them to develop informatics systems in support of their research and what factors are at the forefront as they seek to manage large amounts of research data in a decentralized and collaborative environment. The findings, a mix of the expected and unexpected, have laid the groundwork for new proposals in faculty IT support services.

Supporting E-Learning in Higher Education Key Findings

Supporting E-Learning in Higher Education is the summary of a result of 10 months of collaborative research conducted by ECAR and IDC to learn about evolving student and instructor support requirements for online distance-learning courses, hybrid courses, and traditional courses that leverage technology. It reports the results of nearly 300 college and university survey responses, as well as findings from interviews of more than 50 individuals in higher education. Designed to highlight effective e-learning support practices at selected institutions, the research focused primarily on centrally administered departments that offer e-learning resources across the institution, examining the relationship between successful e-learning strategies and the degree to which faculty and students are supported in integrating technology into the learning experience.
