Abstract:In the past 250 years, there have been few fundamental changes in the nature of higher education. With the high-tech revolution in motion, today's colleges and universities must find a way to integrate the worlds of education, work, and leisure. Students are demanding to be thought of as customers, no longer feeling compelled to unconditionally accept the ways in which subjects are presented. This article speculates how institutions of higher education in the United States will evolve in this changing environment, as well as the impact the emerging for-profit sector will have on the way they do business.
