Abstract:

Cambridge, Maryland, Michigan, and Virginia Tech are collaborating on an open source, online evaluation system integrated with Sakai. This panel will describe the collaborative development partnership, the features of the online evaluation system, the institutional framework and approach for online course evaluations, and the results of pilot studies.

Abstract:

This session will compare and contrast the community source model with the commercial software model in higher education. Two presenters with expertise on both sides of the issue will discuss the relative merits of each model as the basis for implementing the enterprise systems (financial, student information, contract and grant, and teaching and learning) that underlie the essential operations of most higher education institutions.

Abstract:

Maryland and Delaware have each had to transition to a new enterprise learning management system. Maryland moved from two separate systems to a single commercial system, while Delaware moved from one commercial system to an open source system. The presentation will compare their experiences and provide examples and lessons learned.

Begun in 1990, the Campus Computing Project is the largest continuing study of the role of computing, e-learning, and information technology in American higher education. The session will present the results of the 2007 Campus Computing Survey, including new data on P2P policies, open source deployment, IT security issues, strategic and financial planning for IT, instructional integration of IT, campus IT standards, course management systems, and Web site services.

A model for securing buy-in from administration, faculty, students, and IT will be introduced; our specific principles that have enabled successful, wide-spread implementation will be discussed; and key issues will be addressed, from aligning open source with your institutional mission to evaluating the real impact on IT staffing and infrastructure. Guidance on mitigating challenges will be provided by speakers who span faculty, IT, and administration positions.

Abstract:The speaker will examine the current trend toward collaborative open source software development (Sakai, Chandler, uPortal, etc.) in higher education, looking at issues critical to assessing the long-range impact on university systems. This assessment will include a historical perspective; locate this new paradigm in relation to the traditional buy-versus-build choices; and discuss issues related to institutional deployment and lifecycle support.
