Digital Storytelling to Enhance Faculty Development in Universal Design for Learning

This presentation will demonstrate discipline-specific case studies to enhance faculty development in universal design for learning. We will highlight California State University's EnACT project, which supports learning for 10,000 CSU students with disabilities, and MERLOT ELIXR, a faculty development collaboration across state systems and campuses for developing cases and shared teaching resources.

Improving Distributed Education Through Research: Three Studies of E-Pedagogy

The demand for quality, effective online teaching environments is growing. Using three research studies (on social presence in distance learning, threaded discussion, and student technology usage), Academic Outreach proposed synchronous and asynchronous educational strategies to faculty and students in distributed/blended learning environments. Don't miss this opportunity to hear our results.

Authentic Tasks and Assessments: The Keys to Effective E-Learning in Higher Education

Successful higher education e-learning environments exemplify clear alignment among seven factors: objectives, content, instructional design, learner tasks, instructor roles, technological affordances, and assessment. Objectives and assessment are commonly misaligned, but misalignments can be addressed using instructional designs focused on authentic tasks and assessments.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha is engaged in shifting campus culture from teaching to learning through the adoption of myMAPP-mapping academic performance through e-portfolios-an innovative e-portfolio system that addresses how all parts of an institution contribute to the continuous improvement of learning.

Using Wikipedia to Reenvision the Term Paper

The structure of the traditional term paper can limit its educational value. To make the assignment more meaningful, students published their papers in Wikipedia. This session will examine how publishing for a large online community motivated students to do better work and deal with issues of voice, knowledge, and community.

Content Catastrophe: The Gap Between Textbooks and Global Real-Time Knowledge Acquisition

Teaching from a textbook is based on the premises that course materials are static and learning experiences can be standardized. In learner-centered environments in an ever-changing world, content needs to be dynamically controlled by instructors and students. The presenters will use case studies to demonstrate how this has been accomplished in courses on globalization, contemporary media, and international security.

Creating a Podcast System That Is RSS (Really Simple and Stress Free, Not to Mention Cheap)

The podcasting project at MSU created an environment where faculty can walk into a classroom, record their lecture directly to a Web server-accessible location, bring no additional equipment, and have that lecture published automatically. This technical presentation will highlight the development of the Web-based system, the programming involved, and the hardware needed.
