An Initiative to Share Digital Repository Services for Liberal Arts Colleges

In January 2007, 13 geographically separated liberal arts colleges joined with the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE) and the Longsight Group on an initiative for shared, managed, institutional repository services. The resulting collaboration promises to dramatically lower the barrier for entry into an emerging technology for smaller colleges.

Course Views: A Scalable Project to Connect Students to Library Resources

Libraries provide access to a wealth of information resources for students to learn outside the classroom. Unfortunately, these resources are not typically organized around student needs. We will describe a project in development to support student learning by providing course-centric views of library resources for all courses taught at North Carolina State University.

Using Wikipedia to Reenvision the Term Paper

The structure of the traditional term paper can limit its educational value. To make the assignment more meaningful, students published their papers in Wikipedia. This session will examine how publishing for a large online community motivated students to do better work and deal with issues of voice, knowledge, and community.

Content Catastrophe: The Gap Between Textbooks and Global Real-Time Knowledge Acquisition

Teaching from a textbook is based on the premises that course materials are static and learning experiences can be standardized. In learner-centered environments in an ever-changing world, content needs to be dynamically controlled by instructors and students. The presenters will use case studies to demonstrate how this has been accomplished in courses on globalization, contemporary media, and international security.

Time, Space, and History

In everything from stock market reports to brain scans, we increasingly use computers to see patterns that would otherwise remain invisible. But history, and the humanities in general, have been little touched by this widespread change in perception--and are the poorer for it. This lecture will suggest how we might begin to change that situation.
