Bruce Schneier on Information Security: Ten Trends - Sponsored by AT&T, An EDUCAUSE Silver Partner

Surveying current trends in information security, it’s clear that a myriad of forces are at work. But fundamentally, security is all about economics: both attacker and defender are trying to maximize the return on their investments. Economics can both explain why security fails so often and offer new solutions for its success. For example, often the people who could protect a system are not those who suffer the costs of failure. Changing these economic incentives will do more to improve security than will more technology.

Several universities will present how they review and value "running the trains" activities. How do you cost out operational services? Can you quantify customer value? Has the technology changed?

Benchmarks: Helping Your President Understand IT Investments

Presidents face increasing requests for financial resources to support the use of IT on their campuses. Benchmarks for IT--developed in the COSTS project--will be used to illustrate how to shed light on making decisions about information technology in ways similar to decision making about other more traditional resources.

This session was a current issues roundtable.
Just scan today's higher education news stories and it quickly becomes apparent that most colleges and universities have something in common -- the need to lower costs or increase revenue. From experience, we know this is often easier said than done. Please come ready to share with the other participants what has worked or hasn't worked on your campus.
