At LSU , student government is extremely active in a spectrum of campus issues, including IT. Like many universities, LSU has a technology fee, but unlike most, student oversight is required by state law. Far from finding this oppressive, students have become "angel investors," initiating investment and stimulating interest in emerging technologies.

Engaging Executives in Technology Portfolios

At EDUCAUSE 2003, ACU presented a session dealing with the difficulties of implementing a programming prioritization process and the benefits of doing so. Since that time, we have continued to keep our President's Cabinet engaged, but in much different ways than when we began. We will discuss where we started and how the process has evolved.

Building Collaborative Administrative Systems Governance

Princeton University has adopted and refined a collaborative process for identifying, structuring, prioritizing, and scheduling all of our administrative systems projects. We have a three-tiered approach that engages functional users, process and policy owners, and senior executives to collaboratively agree on the administrative system priorities for the university. The best part is, it works extremely well.

IT Governance: (Re-)Assembling the Packets

IT governance concerns not only the anarchic university (on the EDUCAUSE 2004 Top-Ten Current Issues list three times in various guises) but also corporate America. Done wisely, it is a great vehicle for effective management; done poorly, the community feels underserved and acts out accordingly. Examples from both the corporate and higher education worlds illustrate why it is simultaneously so critical and so problematic.

Come share governance structures that provide adequate user satisfaction yet move the institution forward. Share strategies for integrating IT in executive level budget and planning discussions, for developing effective advisory groups, and for allowing constituencies to shape IT's direction.
