Creative Sourcing for Small Schools: Managing Access to Off-Campus Service Providers

Small schools typically have fewer IT staff and resources to address a business challenge and need to think creatively about how to support the growing number of applications their constituents are requesting. Building cyberinfrastructure is particularly challenging, given the problems with scaling investments in technology. Using services provided by another organization is an attractive option, but periodically sending files of personally identifiable information to off-campus service providers so they can manage the accounts is risky. Federated identity management and solutions such as Shibboleth single sign-on and federating software can be used in these instances to enable campuses to streamline the technical management of accounts and maintain control of personal data while keeping the access decision in the hands of the service provider. Attendees of this seminar will leave with the federated identity value proposition, technology overview, strategies for implementation, and next steps for their campus.

Implementing Web Access Management at the University of Guelph

The University of Guelph, a midsize comprehensive university, is converting its IT services to central authentication and authorization. The university is participating in a Shibboleth pilot with the Connection Federation (edupass.ca). This presentation will focus on the challenges and solutions to integrating web applications and services with the Sun Access Manager.

Architecting the Institutional Directory Service: Advanced Issues, Problems, and Solutions

Institutional directory service architects and designers face a number of unique technical challenges in higher education. Directory architects from the University of Southern California and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will share lessons learned while developing and implementing directory services at their institutions.

Topics will include designing access controls and institutional object classes; using federation identities, Shibboleth, and administrative tools; managing multiple data sources, members, accounts, and guests; mapping data sources to standard object classes; handling interactive and bulk updates; optimizing and monitoring performance, replication, and integration with external authentication systems; and managing groups and privileges.

The solutions offered are based on 14-plus years of practical experience working with the Netscape/iPlanet/Sun directory products. This seminar will focus on intermediate to advanced issues, and most information will be widely applicable to and suitable for any institutional directory effort.

Campus and Cyberinfrastructure Integration: Leveraging Campus Authentication to Access the TeraGrid

Since January of 2007, the TeraGrid has been partnering with select campuses to pilot the use of Internet2's Shibboleth and with NCSA and the University of Chicago's GridShb to access grid-enabled resources.
