In June 2004, the Supreme Court upheld exemptions for cable providers, letting them restrict access by competing ISPs to their networks. In 1998-1999 both institutions rolled out respective production DSL services. Stanford partnered initially with Covad, and Carnegie Mellon with Bell Atlantic. Both universities retained responsibility for Internet Service Provider functions. Today each has 350-400 subscribers representing all campus sectors.
