Undergraduates Speak about IT: Results of the 2007 ECAR Survey

ECAR presents key findings from the fourth annual survey of undergraduates, with responses from 27,846 students at 103 higher education institutions. Plans for 2008 will also be discussed.

Intersecting Learner Characteristics and Technology Capabilities: Survey Development and Validation

This session will discuss the methods and preliminary results of the first and second steps of a three-step process for assessing a survey's validity. The survey of interest was designed to expand on McVay (2000, 2001) and Bernard et al. (2004), as well as examine learner characteristics and technology capabilities of online students.

E-Learning Tools and Didactics Increase Science Student Numbers in the Netherlands

The SURF Foundation, the Dutch sister organization of EDUCAUSE, funds a number of initiatives that aim to increase science and technology student numbers in the Netherlands in accordance with EU policy. The presentation critically discusses competency-based assessment tools and didactics of remedial education in science and technology studies.

Fear Factor and American Idol: Leveraging Popular Culture for Student Support

A central tenet of Technology at Simmons College is to help community members learn to care for their computers. One successful strategy has been to run interactive educational programs that draw on popular culture to engage students. Two of these programs have been Technology Fear Factor and Simmons Idol.

ECAR Study of Students and Information Technology, 2005

What are the information technology uses and skills of undergraduate students, how does their use of these technologies contribute to their undergraduate experience, and how does IT add to their learning? Answers to these questions are provided by 18,039 students at 63 higher education institutions in their responses to surveys for the 2005 ECAR study. Comparisons are also made between ECAR 2004 and 2005 study results.

Students and Information Technology: Findings from ECAR

In early 2004, the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research surveyed nearly 4,500 students at 12 universities on their use of technology. The quantitative survey was augmented by more than 20 on-site student focus group sessions. This presentation reviews the key findings of this study. Students use IT primarily for convenience, communications, and control. Also presented are student preferences and skills using IT in the classroom, use of course management systems, and future trends.

Fairleigh Dickinson's Online Learning Requirement: From an Idea to Maturity

Since Fall 2001, all freshmen entering Fairleigh Dickinson University have been required to take one online learning course per year of study. Our program has grown from 177 students in one course to 2,500 students in 74 courses (as of Spring 2004). Our presentation will demonstrate the successes and challenges of implementing this ambitious program.

Integration of Technology in Business Schools

IT programs in schools of business enrich the curriculum with the tools on which modern business is based. This presentation reports a survey of IT priorities, metrics, policies/standards/support, and curriculum integration across American business schools. The survey results also indicate high interest in a consortium for business school IT officers.
