Authoring and Integrating Pachyderm Templates and Other Learning Tools into LMSs

With short feedback loops and minimal administrative overhead, instructors, students, and designers can easily generate and integrate digital content as learning objects into the Web learning platform of their choice. This seminar will discuss and demonstrate 15-plus Pachyderm templates and six separate media authoring tools for a learning management system such as Sakai or WebCT. We will also discuss and practice effective integration strategies and techniques and introduce sharable templates that help in accelerating and simplifying the course development process.

Enhancing In-Class Learning Out of the Classroom: Using "Out-of-Classroom" Technology

Technology is often seen as a tool to support the delivery of course content within the classroom or for distance education only. Drawing from faculty experiences, this presentation will demonstrate four other applications of technology that add value to teaching. It will also critique the merits of using technology to encourage active and student-directed learning.

Converting Existing Online Courses to Learning Objects

The University System of Georgia has been forced to confront the high costs of developing online content. One way the system has done so is to focus on content sharing and reuse by deconstructing existing online courses into reusable learning objects that faculty can retrieve and incorporate into new courses. This session will explore the benefits, success factors, and pitfalls to avoid.

E-Learning Objects: The Value of SCORM and MPEG-4 Packaging for Digital Media Assets

Standardization of e-learning content requires us to look at interoperability, reuse, automated updating, and personalization issues. The object-oriented features of SCORM from the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative and MPEG-4 from ISO/MPEG illustrate the benefits of standardization. Understand how the standards-compliant composition and delivery of object-oriented content enhances the value of e-learning and the diversity of audiences reached.

Creating Learning Objects from Research Content to Open the University

The University of California, Berkeley's Interactive University Project is creating an ecosystem in which university resources from all academic areas are digitized and assembled into learning objects within a standard networked environment for university and K-12 users. Our presentation will address technology and other challenges in this end-to-end process, using examples from the IU and several key national initiatives.
