An Initiative to Share Digital Repository Services for Liberal Arts Colleges

In January 2007, 13 geographically separated liberal arts colleges joined with the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE) and the Longsight Group on an initiative for shared, managed, institutional repository services. The resulting collaboration promises to dramatically lower the barrier for entry into an emerging technology for smaller colleges.

Collaborative Library Instruction Repository

Librarians at James Madison University created a repository whereby all staff can access library instruction materials. Using an application developed in house, the Collaborative Library Instruction Repository facilitates sharing and serves as a model to other academic departments looking to manage their collective output.

The University of Richmond, working with Tufts University on an Institute for Museum and Library Services-funded newspaper digitization project, has developed strategies, work flows, and tools that will help smaller institutions build successful and cost-effective digital libraries, not only as an end in itself, but as a prudent path to the development of successful digital repositories.

The Data Deluge Hits Campus

New scholarly practices under the banner of e-science and e-scholarship are unleashing a data deluge. While cyberinfrastructure efforts are being deployed to address this challenge, their viewpoint tends to be disciplinary rather institutional. This session will take the institutional perspective, reviewing policy, technical, standards, and organizational developments central to campus responses to these new scholarly practices and depicting a future in which mutually supporting institutional, disciplinary, and national approaches to stewardship can evolve together.

Early Development Experiences from the Fedora Project

In 2001, UVA and Cornell joined forces to build the first repository management system based on Fedora (Flexible Extensible Digital Object Repository Architecture).
