This group focuses on developing, collecting, and reporting IT metrics, leveraging peer efforts, and identifying benchmarks to improve the overall performance of IT departments. Frequently used metrics are customers' feedback on IT services, balanced with internally recorded metrics of actual customer IT services usage. A constant goal of this group is to assist others in implementing metrics in a more rigorous, meaningful, and timely manner.

Answering the Value Question: Does Technology Impact Student Success?

In measuring the value of IT as it relates to student success, a recent study at 16 community colleges examined student technology skills, usage patterns, and preferences for technology at their institution. Many significant findings revealed a strong connection between student technology characteristics and student academic success.

The e-Framework for Education and Research

The e-Framework for Education and Research is an initiative created by public funding bodies in Europe and Australasia. It coordinates information relating how educational institutions across the globe are using technology to support their strategic priorities and how this can be supported by a service-oriented approach to technologies based on open standards. The session will give an overview of the e-Framework and raise some points for discussion.

Blogs, Wikis, and Podcasts: Personal Authoring Technologies Enrich Communication and Expression for You and Your Students

Personal authoring technologies have made it easier than ever for instructors and students to contribute their thoughts, experiences, and opinions to a global discourse. In addition, these technologies provide a rich opportunity for instructors to focus their students' attention on discipline-specific questions related to a single course or topic.

This seminar will give attendees valuable "face time" with blogs, wikis, and podcasts in order to critically assess their instructional value and creative potential, as well as the IT infrastructure required to support them. We will demonstrate the numerous technologies UW-Madison is using, discuss the pedagogical application and assessment of these technologies, present an overview of IT support challenges, and provide hands-on experiences with the production of blogs, wikis, and podcasts. The seminar will conclude with a discussion of other personal authoring technologies emerging on the educational horizon.

Measuring What Matters

Service Quality Assessments with Higher Education TechQual+

The Higher Education TechQual+ Project is a nationwide effort to develop a standardized approach to outcomes-based, service-quality assessments. The instrument is delivered through the Web, shielding participants from the complexities of survey research. The presentation will cover project history, the instrument, and assessment and reporting functionality, as well as case studies of its use at several institutions.

The Role of Information Technology in an Age of Access, Affordability, and Accountability

Approximately a year ago, the Commission on the Future of Higher Education formed by U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings issued its report, A Test of Leadership: Charting the Future of U.S. Higher Education, which called for dramatic improvement in the national higher education system. Focusing on issues of access, affordability, quality, and accountability, the report outlined significant shortcomings and recommended sweeping changes. Our panelists, all members of the commission, will address issues raised in the report and the role technology can play in support of the recommendations.

Applying the IT Service CMM model in a University Service Delivery Environment

The IT Service Capability Maturity Model (ITS-CMM) is an emerging standard for assessing the capabilities of IT service organizations. We will discuss our experience in applying the ITS-CMM to an IT service delivery environment, specifically a centralized help desk. This help desk is the primary point of contact for our nearly 3,000 IT users.
