Abstract:

Where do students use computers? Many institutions believe students don't need computing facilities because many own laptops. Some campuses create distributed environments with two computers and a printer per residence hall; others build massive computing labs with hundreds of workstations. CMC has explored an alternative solution to student computing.

Abstract:Charging for printing is always a sticky subject. Students see it as another fee and perceive they are getting "nickel and dimed" to death. Le Moyne College introduced a print conservation program that saved money, reduced student printing by 50% in one semester, and met with almost no resistance.

Abstract:The Self-Help Clinic is a way to educate and enable Simmons students in the management of their own technology. Attendees sign a release acknowledging that help desk staff will provide guidance, but that they are responsible for their own computers and for the work done during the clinic.
