The e-Framework for Education and Research

The e-Framework for Education and Research is an initiative created by public funding bodies in Europe and Australasia. It coordinates information relating how educational institutions across the globe are using technology to support their strategic priorities and how this can be supported by a service-oriented approach to technologies based on open standards. The session will give an overview of the e-Framework and raise some points for discussion.

Aligning IT Leadership with Institutional Missions: The Reality of Being a CIO

Senior IT leaders in higher education function at the intersection of two worlds. CIOs serve as the interface between the processes and practices of the technological world and the ambiguities and diversity of the academic world. This seminar will review the various roles CIOs are expected to play, as well as how those roles may be changing. We will explore strategies IT leaders can use to align their organizations and themselves with the institutional missions.

While the session is especially designed for new and relatively new IT leaders, experienced CIOs will also find value in it, as it will help them reassess their roles and the their institutions' changing expectations of them. Topics will include what senior institutional leaders want and need from senior IT leaders, relationships with faculty and staff, the importance of customer service, organizational structure, leading as a change agent, and career issues.

Calming the Waters: Facilitating Technology Change at Your University

This hands-on seminar addresses the driving forces behind educational technology change and helps participants outline strategies for how their institutions can deal with these changes from the theoretical "innovation adoption" and "change process" perspectives as well as practical approaches. We will present a case study of the process used at the University of Missouri-Columbia including statistics to collect, partnerships important to nurture, and "costs" to consider in a successful migration scenario. Participants will then work on developing consolidation/migration plans and discuss those strategies.

The EDUCAUSE "Grand Challenges" Initiative

This session will present the EDUCAUSE "Grand Challenges" initiative, which will be the major focus of the association's initiatives in 2007 and beyond. Higher education faces major issues of access, affordability, and accountability; how IT can make a difference in these arenas needs to be demonstrated. This session will highlight EDUCAUSE's ongoing process of evaluating and identifying IT's role in these issues and the initial projects that will contribute to this linkage.

Portal Growing Pains: Aligning to Your Institutional Goals

The Gettysburg portal team has increasingly sought projects for implementation that support a number of the college's strategic initiatives. In implementing these, we have seen several offices making process changes that would have taken a much longer time to implement in the past. The portal has become an interesting source of change on campus.

But from the first, there has been considerable confusion about what it means for something to "matter." This presentation will define different meanings behind statements that technology does (or doesn't) matter, largely to inform and stimulate discussion among those present.

General Session - Molly Broad

Molly Corbett Broad is president of the University of North Carolina and serves as chief executive officer of all 16 of North Carolina's public institutions that grant baccalaureate degrees. Active in a number of professional and civic organizations, Broad has written and spoken widely on strategic planning for higher education and on emerging technologies. She serves on a variety of boards, including those for the International Council for Distance Education and the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development. She also sits on several advisory boards, including those of the Mellon Foundation and the National Technology Task Force.Prior to her presidency in North Carolina, Broad served as executive vice chancellor and chief operating officer of the California State University system. Before that, she was executive director and chief executive officer of the Arizona Board of Regents, serving as the top administrator for Arizona's three-campus university system. Prior to her tenure in Arizona, Broad worked at Syracuse University in a number of roles, including director of institutional research and vice president for government and corporate relations.

Which Comes First: The Story of Information Technology Planning for New Campuses

Rice University is collaborating in the development of the International University of Bremen (IUB), the first private research university in Europe. Olin College is opening a brand new engineering college with a grant from the FW Olin Foundation. This "work-in-progress" presentation will focus on the challenges inherent in meeting the goals and deadlines of the multitude of tasks necessary to start up institution while incorporating collaborative relationships and responsibilities into the fabric of the institutions.
