Developing and Extending a Cyberinfrastructure Model

This research bulletin explores how to develop, deploy, and extend cyberinfrastructure assets within higher education—both within and across institutions. As research becomes increasingly computational, data-intensive, and interdisciplinary, innovative approaches for functional cyberinfrastructure models become ever more important. This bulletin describes a model that was developed at one institution and then deployed across institutions, with the goal of addressing issues as diverse as the need for simulation systems rather than wet labs, insufficient computational research support to help an institution compete for top-notch faculty, and astronomical spikes in power and cooling demands.

Citation for this work: Alvarez, Rosio. “Developing and Extending a Cyberinfrastructure Model” (Research Bulletin, Issue 5).
Converged Communications (CCWG)

In the spirit of convergence, the former Wireless Networking and Integrated Communications Strategies working groups have merged and will be once again holding their all day meeting as the Converged Communications working group (CCWG). Please join us to discuss some exciting topics in the realm of convergence and mobility such as Duke University's pilot wireless network project (using 802.11n) that affords up to five times the performance of traditional wireless networks. And what about IPvideo? Is there anything happening in the WiMAX space? And now that convergence is real, what about "presence" and privacy? Come prepared to share your questions and your experiences.

IT Governance: Solid Structures and Practical Politics

Presentation at the Sixth Annual ECAR Symposium, December 5-7, 2007, in Boca Raton, Florida. Higher education IT organizations have become increasingly aware of the need for governance processes that sit above day-to-day management and address strategic alignment and the political realities of satisfying IT's many constituencies. But how should -and do- higher education institutions govern IT? This presentation uses the results of an ECAR study of IT governance to frame an interactive session on how to mix good structural governance practices with practical politics.

How to Cite This Work: Yanosky, Ronald, and John W. McCredie. "IT Governance: Solid Structures and Practical Politics." Presentation at the ECAR Symposium, Boca Raton, FL, December 5-7, 2007, available from http://www.educause.edu/ecar.

IT Engagement in Research: A View of Medical School Practice - Corporate Edition

This ECAR research study was designed in collaboration with the Association of American Medical Colleges to analyze the practices and perspectives of IT organizations that support the academic research enterprise in medical schools and colleges. As the potential of biotechnology, proteomics, informatics, computational genomics, and other IT-intensive disciplines continue to offer breakthroughs in medicine, research in these fields requires greater and higher-level technology resources for infrastructure as well as IT support and services. The study is based on the results of a web-based survey sent to 125 medical schools and colleges in the United States, as well as qualitative interviews with leaders at 10 institutions. Respondents to the survey were predominantly chief information officers or other top administrators from 50 medical institutions, yielding a response rate of 39.7 percent. The findings contained in this report echo the results of the ECAR 2006 study, IT Engagement in Research: A Baseline Study, illustrating that the role and importance of IT in research is growing, while funding and budget decisions remain difficult. A non-profit edition is available here.

Citation for This Work: Nelson, Mark R. IT Engagement in Research: A View of Medical School Practice (Research Study, Vol. 1).
Cyberinfrastructure Resources and Practices: Survey Questionnaire

This November 2007 survey is a critical component of the EDUCAUSE Center on Applied Research (ECAR) study of cyberinfrastructure in higher education. It seeks to understand the perspectives of information technology leaders and others currently working in universities and colleges. This study updates and expands our communities' understanding of how leading-edge information technology resources for research, scholarship, creative activity, and teaching and learning are utilized, provided, supported, and funded. This study is being conducted through the collaboration of many parties including the Council of Australian University Directors of Information Technology (CAUDIT), the European University Information Systems organization (EUNIS), the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR), and the EDUCAUSE Net@EDU Campus Cyberinfrastructure (CCI) working group.

How To Cite This Work: EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research. "Cyberinfrastructure Resources and Practices: Survey Questionnaire" (Survey Instrument).
Research Mission Support

This meeting will provide a forum for discussing IT support for institutional research missions. The two broad categories of concern include support for research administration and IT support for research activities. Research administration support involves pre- and post-award support, interaction with federal grant systems, regulatory compliance, and intellectual property management. Supporting research activities includes centralized versus decentralized approaches, high-performance computing, advanced networking, and informatics, as well as enabling multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and interinstitutional work.

E07 Podcast: Transforming Earth Sciences via Next-Generation Internet Linkages

This 32-minute podcast recorded during the EDUCAUSE 2007 Annual Conference features John Delaney, Professor of Oceanography, University of Washington speaking on Transforming Earth Sciences via Next-Generation Internet Linkages Between the Oceans and Classrooms, Laboratories, and Living Rooms. The slides that accompanied the presentation are also available.

The abstract from this session:

New technologies and infrastructure that extend bandwidth and power to the seafloor are being developed within the Ocean Observatories Initiative of the National Science Foundation. A major component of this effort involving construction of major cabled subsea networks is focusing on science and education programs that will make use of this unprecedented interactive access to study the northeast Pacific Ocean. The last frontier on Earth—the deep sea—will be accessible to a global community of scientists, educators, decision makers, and learners of all ages. New technologies will enable new approaches to studies of ocean and earth processes that, for example, regulate global climate, absorb greenhouse gases, generate earthquakes and tsunamis, support major fish stocks, harbor life in the extreme environments of sea floor volcanoes, and form vast mineral resources.

CyberBridges—An Authentic Learning Case Study

CyberBridges trains graduate students how to use cyberinfrastructure (CI) -- a combination of computing systems, applications, and virtual organizations. Supported by NSF, CyberBridges hinges on the hypothesis that technical training of graduate students will not only lead to more rapid scientific discovery but will also trigger greater CI adoption in academic departments. Students are trained in networking and grid computing and then integrate what they have learned into their research to develop innovative tools or approaches. Due to the success of the initial program, CyberBridges has gone "global," involving students in China, Hong Kong, and Brazil.

7 Things You Should Know About Cyberinfrastructure

Cyberinfrastructure is not a new technology, per se, or merely a better, faster Internet. While cyberinfrastructure brings together high-performance computing, remote sensors, large data sets, middleware, and sophisticated applications (modeling, simulation, visualization), it also involves people as participants in the generation of knowledge, giving them the opportunity to share expertise, tools, and facilities. Cyberinfrastructure merges technology, data, and human resources into a seamless whole.

The "7 Things You Should Know About..." series from the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) provides concise information on emerging learning technologies. Each brief focuses on a single technology and describes what it is, where it is going, and why it matters to teaching and learning. Use these briefs for a no-jargon, quick overview of a topic and share them with time-pressed colleagues.

In addition to the "7 Things You Should Know About…" briefs, you may find other ELI resources useful in addressing teaching, learning, and technology issues at your institution. To learn more, please visit the ELI Resources page.

University Networking Program

Over the last decade, advanced networking became an indispensable component of academic life. From research and learning applications to the general explosion of Web-based communications, the need for high-performance network connectivity is paramount. At University of British Columbia (UBC), an emerging connectivity deficit stemming from inadequate campus-wide planning between "have" and "have not" departments and newer and older facilities posed concerns for students, faculty, and staff. The University Network Program (UNP) was established to advance a comprehensive strategy for renewing, expanding, and sustaining a future-oriented network presence across the 1,000 acre UBC campus. The solution called for an end-to-end connectivity service to permanently supplant the existing fragmentary networks dotting the campus. Its other goals included: • providing one port per 100 square feet of space, and one in every classroom, lab, and seminar room; • offering 100Mbps in-building connectivity with a redundant gigabit backbone and Category 6 copper cable throughout buildings; • creating a usable, secure, low-maintenance, wide-ranging wireless network; • developing an inventive network maintenance tool for use throughout campus; and • completely overhauling the university's funding model for ongoing network support. Generating campus-wide support and cooperation (making the case for such a program) was an integral, ongoing part of this strategy.

Post-9/11 Emergency Response and Business Continuity Changes at Pace University and New York University

This case study investigates how two major New York City universities, Pace University and New York University, changed their business continuity, disaster recovery, and emergency response thinking and practices after experiencing a major emergency. Researchers conducted this in-depth case study to complement the 2007 ECAR study, Shelter from the Storm: IT and Business Continuity in Higher Education, which provides higher education with empirical information about where its business continuity vulnerabilities, plans, and practices stand in relation to surveyed institutions, and what factors are associated with success in planning for the delivery of information technology–dependent business services following a spectrum of potential service disruptions. Senior IT administrators at 340 colleges and universities completed the quantitative survey that informed the study.

University of California, Davis: Creating an Institutional Framework for Business Continuity

This case study discusses the business continuity and disaster recovery activities of the University of California, Davis, Office of Administration, highlighting the implications of these activities for the Information and Educational Technology group. Researchers conducted this in-depth case study to complement the 2007 ECAR study, Shelter from the Storm: IT and Business Continuity in Higher Education, which provides higher education with empirical information about where its business continuity vulnerabilities, plans, and practices stand in relation to surveyed institutions, and what factors are associated with success in planning for the delivery of information technology-dependent business services following a spectrum of potential service disruptions. Senior IT administrators at 340 colleges and universities completed the quantitative survey that informed the study.

Seizing the Moment: A New Model for Disaster Recovery at Florida State University

This case study examines how one institution, Florida State University, uses high-speed networking to deliver disaster recovery and business continuity services from a remote site.

Improving IT Governance in Higher Education

This research bulletin examines the ways many research universities govern their IT activities, explores some inherent problems in these processes, identifies several good practices, and suggests changes that may improve the current state of the art. It draws on research conducted by MIT and ECAR on IT alignment and governance; information submitted to the EDUCAUSE Core Data Service survey; the results of an extensive review of IT governance at the University of California, Berkeley; a one-day governance workshop hosted by the Common Solutions Group; the work of a project team participating in the IT Leaders Project; and the observations and results of several external review committees on which the author has served.

IT Engagement in Research: A Baseline Study - Key Findings

This ECAR Key Findings explores the practices and perspectives of IT organizations that support the academic research enterprise. To collect, analyze, and distribute information across an expanding range academic disciplines and geographic locations, research efforts rely heavily on IT infrastructure, people, and a broad range of IT services. Ever-larger data sets are being collected and shared, simulations and visualization are becoming routine tools, and the co-evolution of science and computing increasingly requires scientists to have solid grounding in information management.

Ever-larger data sets are being collected and shared, simulations and visualization are becoming routine tools, and the co-evolution of science and computing increasingly requires scientists to have solid grounding in information management. This study reports the results of a variety of research initiatives: a literature review, quantitative and qualitative data from 328 higher education institutions (315 U.S. and 13 Canadian institutions), and five in-depth cases studies. In addition, ECAR published What Do Researchers Need? Higher Education IT from the Researcher's Perspective, to supplement this study.

What Do Researchers Need? Higher Education IT from the Researcher’s Perspective

Research methods, research subjects, the composition of research teams, and collaborative practices have all been affected in ways that are important to those who manage research and information technology (IT) on campuses. The boundaries of any single institution's research computing infrastructure have expanded to include regional, national, and international as well as campus-specific resources. Researchers continue to need speed, flexibility, and affordability when it comes to networking, and IT is still learning how to most effectively support the work of collaborations undertaken at a distance. This occasional paper focuses on the national research agenda, research trends, and IT from the researcher's perspective.

Vista to support IPv6 natively

Vista, the next version of Microsoft Windows, is going to support IPv6 natively. IPv6 is the next-generation of Internet Protocol, which adds a swathe of enhancements to the more widespread IPv4 which has been used in previous versions.

IPv6 has a number of features to make autoconfiguration (when the computer works out all it needs to know about the network by looking at the network itself, rather than from endless dialog boxes) easier; multicast (when a single computer broadcasts a single stream of data to many other computers) more efficient; routing faster and the whole lot significantly more secure.

IPv6 is widely seen as key to allowing very large numbers of devices to connect to the Internet simultaneously. Whereas previously IPv4 supports 4.3×10^9 (4.3 billion) simultaneous connections, IPv6 supports 3.4×10^38 addresses: billions of addresses per person.

A research version of the IPv6 ``stack'' for windows has been kicking around for at least six years, and appears to be stable and interoperable, so it seems unlikely to be cut from Vista. While the stack implements IPSec (the optional security module of IPv6), it is not clear whether it is likely to be widely used in windows environments.

Lev Gonick was named one of this year's premier 100 CIOs by ComputerWorld Magazine and last year's CIOs to watch by InformationWeek. So, what's he up to in the frozen tundra on the shores of Lake Erie at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland? Read his blog and join readers both inside and outside the academy to find out. One of Gonick's major projects is known as OneCleveland—a big, bold, 21st-century community-oriented project that delivers advanced information technology capabilities to achieve community priorities for economic development, learning, job training, research support, and preeminence and distinction. Last month, he joined an invitational group in Stockholm at Nobel Week to share the OneCleveland story with dignitaries from around the world on the theme of the relationship between technology on campus and the broader community. Join Gonick for a wide-ranging conversation on OneCleveland topics and the role of the university and technology in the 21st-century community.
