Free and Open Source Options for Creating Database-Driven Subject Guides

This article reviews available cost-effective options libraries have for updating and maintaining pathfinders such as subject guides and course pages. The paper discusses many of the available options, from the standpoint of a mid-sized academic library which is evaluating alternatives to static-HTML subject guides. Static HTML guides, while useful, have proven difficult and time-consuming to maintain. The article includes a discussion of open source database-driven solutions (such as SubjectsPlus, LibData, Research Guide, and Library Course Builder), Wikis, and social tagging sites like del.icio.us. This article discusses both the functionality and the relative strengths and weaknessess of each of these options.

Stephen G. Nichols tells of creating a digital library of manuscripts of the <i>Romance of the Rose</i>, the most popular vernacular French romance of the Middle Ages. The scholarly rationale for the digital library project proved the easy part. Nichols also shares the complex, technical steps of digitizing the manuscripts.

The MetaArchive Cooperative has established a new mailing list for discussion of distributed/federated digital preservation issues and strategies. This list will work toward building cross-community relationships for a variety of federated digital preservation organizations.

I put this up earlier today and the list was not quite ready for subscription.

However, you can now subscribe at:
http://listserv.emory.edu/wa.exe?SUBED1=distributed-preservation-l&A=1

Educause Live! Podcast: Architectures for Collaboration—Roles and Expectations for Digital Libraries.

From January, 2007, your host, Steve Worona, is joined by Peter Brantley for the topic "Architectures for Collaboration—Roles and Expectations for Digital Libraries". Click on this topic link for access to the accompanying presentation slides.

The collective expertise of digital libraries in making available the diverse literatures of science and artistic expression, in concert with the increasing sophistication of commercial partners and the development of distributed, interactive forms of publishing, require libraries to chart the engineering of new architectures for teaching, learning, and research. Digital libraries must work to forge the new collaborations required to enable and build these services.

Size Isn't Everything: Sustainable Repositories as Evidenced by Sustainable Deposit Profiles

The key to a successful repository is sustained deposits, and the key to sustained deposits is community engagement. This article looks at deposit profiles automatically generated from OAI harvesting information and argues that repositories characterised by occasional large-volume deposits are a sign of a failure to embed in institutional processes. The ideal profile for a successful repository is discussed, and a new service that ranks repositories based on these criteria is implemented.

The Content of Collaboration

The author discusses the delicate balance of creating collaborative relationships between faculty, librarians and IT staff. One such Fellowship effort is sponsored by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). In attracting recent Ph.D.s who believe that there are opportunities to develop meaningful linkages between disciplinary scholarship, libraries, archives, and evolving digital tools, the program brings scholars with both teaching and digital experience into the academic library so that they may serve as a bridge between librarians, faculty, and IT professionals.

Architectures for Collaboration—Roles and Expectations for Digital Libraries

The collective expertise of digital libraries in making available the diverse literatures of science and artistic expression, in concert with the increasing sophistication of commercial partners and the development of distributed, interactive forms of publishing, require libraries to chart the engineering of new architectures for teaching, learning, and research. Digital libraries must work to forge the new collaborations required to enable and build these services.

Contexts and Contributions: Building the Distributed Library

Martha L. Brogan's Contexts and Contributions: Building the Distributed Library is a major contribution to the Digital Library Federation's (DLF) suite of work that focuses on the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). With generous funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, DLF has harnessed deep OAI expertise from the University of Michigan, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Emory University to prototype "next-generation" OAI services informed by advisory panels of scholars and technical experts; to build registries of providers to aid in the creation of new OAI-based services; and to formulate best practices for sharable metadata that focus what we have learned collectively for innovative library services. The best practices work has received intellectual and practical support from our colleagues at the National Science Digital Library (NSDL), a service of the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Digital Library as Network and Community Center: A Successful Model for Contribution and Use

The following article describes work on implementing a community DL model through a set of services that enabled geoscience education projects to collectively build the Teach the Earth educational digital library. The focus is on three aspects of this work: 1) facilitating community publishing, 2) creating a navigational and organizational framework that integrates the work of all included projects into a DL, 3) and identifying the ways in which the network centric DL that results from these efforts meets users' needs by complementing their natural search behaviors.

Using the Audit Checklist for the Certification of a Trusted Digital Repository as a Framework for Evaluating Repository Software Applications: A Progress Report

Digital library initiatives have encouraged the development and implementation of repository software applications such as DSpace, Eprints, and Greenstone. These applications are being commonly deployed within the context of institutional or digital repositories. As the boundaries of, and landscapes around, institutional or digital repositories become more clearly defined and expressed, there is a greater need to have useful methods for evaluating repository software applications and the role they play in the broader context of repository services. Regarding digital preservation specifically, the 2005 RLG/NARA Audit Checklist for the Certification of a Trusted Digital Repository, Draft for Public Comment (Audit Checklist) is a current document under consideration for determining an institution's ability to be a Trusted Digital Repository. The NDIIPP-sponsored ECHO DEPository project is proposing a framework of evaluation for repository software applications based on the Audit Checklist in conjunction with a common software evaluation scoring methodology. This paper provides an overview of our work to date in this area.

Repository Librarian and the Next Crusade: The Search for a Common Standard for Digital Repository Metadata

"Metadata is an exceedingly broad category of information covering everything from an object's title and date of origin to information about layout, presentation, and rights. Within libraries and digital object repositories, metadata is the cornerstone of the infrastructure required for exchange and use of information. While metadata standards abound, and acceptance and use of these standards is equally widespread, agreement on a common standard is much harder to find."

Sustaining Digital Libraries Symposium

Today I am at a symposium being hosted by the Emory University Libraries on sustainability issues in digital libraries. This short but informative day on DL sustainability has been well worth the trip. Highlights of the day were the panel sessions (which were far ranging in types of speakers - Chris Greer (OCI)-Charles Henry (ACLS)-Martha Anderson (LoC) - Daryl Donakowski (ICPSR) - Robyn Asbury (BookSurge) - David Seaman (DLF)) - as well as a great opener by Greg Crane of the Perseus Project and Paul Courant who is currently working with LC on their NDIIPP initiative.

The thought of the day from this event for me was raised by Greg Crane when he asked why are we looking at sustaining digital libraries and not looking at sustaining libraries? This was right on target in my book and gives me a good lead into promoting another event that was held in September at the University of Texas on the Future of the Research Library (audio files available).

Moving Towards Shareable Metadata

A focus of digital libraries, particularly since the advent of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting, is aggregating from multiple collections metadata describing digital content. However, the quality and interoperability of the metadata often prevents such aggregations from offering much more than very simple search and discovery services. Shareable metadata is metadata which can be understood and used outside of its local environment by aggregators to provide more advanced services. This paper describes shareable metadata, its characteristics, and its importance to digital library development, as well as barriers and challenges to its implementation.

Scholarship and Academic Libraries (and their kin) in the World of Google

The prospect of ubiquitous digitization will not change the fundamental relationships among scholarship, academic libraries, and publication. Collaboration across time and space, which is a principal mechanism of scholarship, ought to be enhanced. Reforms in copyright law will be required if the promise of digitization is to be realized; absent such reform, there is a serious risk that much academically valuable material will become invisible and unused. Ubiquitous digitization will change radically the economics that have supported university–based collections of published material. Scholars and scholarly institutions (including libraries and university presses) must assert vigorously claims of fair use and openness.

Disciplining Search/Searching Disciplines: Perspectives from Academic Communities on Metasearch Quality Indicators

"Quality Metrics" is an IMLS–funded research project which aims to address longstanding deficits in the formal conceptual support for and development of scholarly digital libraries. Central to attaining these goals is collecting and analyzing feedback from stakeholders in the scholarly community about the efficacy and value of key aspects of search technologies; including search interfaces, modalities, and results displays. A team at Emory University conducted this foundational research by utilizing the qualitative methodology of focus groups. In addition to an initial set of exploratory focus groups, the team conducted a second round of focus group sessions with a protoype search system specially designed for scholarly digital libraries. This paper describes the concept, objectives, methodology, and findings of the focus groups component of the Quality Metrics Project.

Libraries, Web/Library 2.0 and privacy

Rory Litwin (Library Juice) has some interesting commentary about privacy and social computing in the library space. IMHO, he rightly characterizes it as a Library 2.0 problem ... it isn't really just about social computing in the most traditional sense ... in an era of mashups and a press towards identity management in way that may not yet be well understood, this is a good thing to remind of ourselves of.

The Central Problem of Library 2.0: Privacy
http://libraryjuicepress.com/blog/?p=68

Endeca's patent and the potential impact on innovation in libraries?

Any ideas about what Endeca's patent covering guided navigation means for innovation in the library sector and elsewhere? I believe that I read that the eXtensible Catalog (XC) project had hoped to create similar functionality ... and what about SIMILE (and the semantic web more broadly)? I haven't read the patent filing yet, but it should make for interesting fodder for discussion going forward.
Building a National Science Digital Library

Since 2000, the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Core Integration team has been creating the infrastructure for a digital library of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics resources. That library now contains more than a million resources from approximately 100 collections. In this talk, Dean Krafft gives a short historical overview of the NSDL and describes the current NSDL community and participants. He then reviews the technical underpinnings of NSDL 1.0, a library built on metadata harvesting, and describes some of the challenges encountered. For the past year (2005-6), the project has been working on NSDL 2.0, a new version of the library built on the Fedora repository architecture. For the last part of the talk, Krafft describes this new library architecture and explains how it supports creating context for science resources, how it enhances the selection and use of library materials, and what these capabilities mean for the users of the NSDL.
