This session will introduce wiki concepts and explore their use in project management and in supporting IT systems in higher education. JHU's implementation of a new student information system extensively uses an enterprise wiki, which will be highlighted, along with use cases, examples, and lessons learned.

As both of the reviewers note, these two books are both geared toward providing suggestions and strategies to the IT manager. The first review on The Visible Ops Handbook: Starting ITIL in 4 Practical Steps, notes that this book is an invaluable guide to IT change management. The second review is on Student Information Systems: A Guide to Implementation Success, which discusses how to navigate the implentation process of a student information system (SIS).

Abstract:Marquette University implemented a successful Project Management Office (PMO) within IT Services. This presentation will concentrate on the value of a PMO and how to develop a PMO. It will also provide an example of the role the PMO played in implementing Marquette's new student information system.

Abstract:Two states, Arizona and Ohio, entered into a joint project to design and prototype a "course applicability system," with a goal to provide a statewide decentralized electronic transfer and advising system building on four basic functions: facilitate the development of inter-institutional course transfer agreements; determine transferability of courses from one institution to another, demonstrate the applicability of courses to specific academic programs, and make the system available via the Web. The challenge was to accomplish this goal with staff located in two states. This paper describes how the project was managed, how it was organized, what was successful, what obstacles were overcome, and how they were overcome.

Abstract:In 1991, the Student Information area of The University of Connecticut Computer Center faced many problems. There was very little documentation, many jobs were not in production and being run as "test" jobs from programmers' machines, and the staff had no overall knowledge of the projects under development. In addition, bad economic times had resulted in the loss of many knowledgeable personnel. In the midst of these difficulties, the student information group was assigned the task to implement a university-wide touch-tone registration system. In order to cope, we restructured our group to insure rapid development and first-time perfect operation of the new system. This paper will discuss our new standards and procedures, the problems we have encountered, and the progress we have made toward achieving our goal.
