This ECAR case study complements the 2008 ECAR study, Process and Politics: IT Governance in Higher Education, by Ronald Yanosky with Jack McCredie. ECAR undertook this case study of the University of California Berkeley to demonstrate how a large, decentralized research university approaches a complete rethinking of a campus information technology (IT) governance structure and the steps taken to initiate the transition to the new structure.

This keynote presentation will discuss the current IT environment at NASA and the IT challenges that the agency faces as it moves into a new era of space exploration. The CIO from the Kennedy Space Center will discuss new strategic directions and supporting initiatives being implemented across the agency to enable future mission success.

In an environment of rapid technological development and increasing accountability, institutions need to poise themselves for adaptability while containing costs. Saint Xavier University formed an internal work group, advancing information management (AIM), to examine ways to leverage existing technology and align enrollment initiatives with institutional processes while advancing the institution's vision and mission.

Successful IT infrastructures and architectures are expected to nimbly provide the context for protecting and sharing information and identities. In today's world, new legislation, expectations from faculty and students, and managing risk several times a second are all threats to keeping current services relevant and time to market for new services reasonable. Understanding the importance and nature of the intersection created by security, identity, and policy is vital to planning the future of our infrastructures and architectures.

In a recent survey, one-third of CIOs polled had a high-level architecture group. Of the remaining CIOs, one-third were planning to establish an architecture group in the next year or two. MIT recently completed a benchmark study on the use of educational technology in subjects considered to count toward the core curriculum (General Institute Requirements). This presentation will discuss how the data was collected, analyzed, and implemented.

As demand and cost for resources grow and we look to technology for solutions, it is imperative that we use technology resources on campuses wisely. Technology projects spring up here, there, and everywhere! Hear how Cal State Northridge has implemented a process to effectively identify and manage our technology projects.

Enterprise architecture can translate vision into effective enterprise change. In a recent survey, 20 percent of CIOs were planning a new enterprise architecture group. This session will discuss the formation of variations, interaction styles and the placement of EA in the organization, and a new EA peer group in academia.
