Abstract:

Privacy is a concept established by law and often embraced as part of institutional policies, academic values, or professional practice. Innovations in information technologies and changing cultural norms present new privacy challenges and opportunities for academic organizations. This session will highlight the privacy issues that confront higher education IT professionals and offer a path for moving forward.

Abstract:Some 230 years ago, Patrick Henry aid, "Give me liberty, or give me death!" Kansas Senator Patrick Roberts recently said, "You have no civil liberties if you're dead." This contrast outlines a national debate coming soon to you. Technology has helped create a robust surveillance society wherein we must choose how much privacy we're willing to sacrifice for security. This thoughtful session will discuss these choices and define privacy and security.

Abstract:Temple University (TU) initiated the TUid project to eliminate the use of the Social Security number as the primary identifier to better protect individuals' privacy. This session will describe project organization, focusing on legacy and ancillary system modifications, the distribution of new ID cards, and the identification and conversion of shadow systems.

Abstract:Privacy and security have become major policy concerns, both within the halls of Congress and institutions of higher education. New legislative and regulatory proposals aim to enhance cyber security, curb spam, address identity theft, require privacy policies, amend the USA PATRIOT Act, and protect personally identifiable information, including Social Security numbers. This session will focus on the status of current federal legislation, prospects for future developments, and implications for institutional policies and practices.
