Abstract:

Fuchs discusses the impediments to collaboration as well as remarkable current efforts that might point the way to the future of information technology in higher education. He indicates that "Middleware", software which enables direct communication between systems and applications, will enable institutions to assemble and run a common architecture that lowers the threshold of effort and therefore substantially decreases the cost of development and ownership.
