Type:Articles, Papers, and Reports
Abstract:

This research bulletin explores the advanced networking issues and investments that colleges and universities that aspire to support their faculty and students in leading edge research and education activities must face in the near future. It is drawn from the work of the Advanced Networking Services Work Group at the University of California, which was charged with evaluating the current state of UC’s networking infrastructure, identifying best practices in global networking activities, and making recommendations to position UC for competitive advantage. The author served as chair of the Work Group.

CNI Podcast: nanoHUB.org: Future Cyberinfrastructure - An Interview with George B. Adams III

Created by Gerry Bayne (EDUCAUSE) on April 25, 2008

This podcast features an interview with George B. Adams III, Associate Director for Programs, Network for Computational Nanotechnology at Purdue University. Our interview was recorded at the CNI 2008 Spring Task Force Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

nanoHUB provides users with “fingertip access” to over 70 simulation tools for research and education. Users not only launch jobs that are executed on the state-of-the-art computational facilities of Open Science Grid and TeraGrid, but also interactively visualize and analyze the results--all via an ordinary Web browser. nanoHUB middleware hides the complexity of Grid computing, handling authentication, authorization, file transfer, and visualization, and letting the researcher focus on research. This approach also helps educators bring these tools to the classroom, letting them bypass the difficulties of Grid computing and focus instead on learning science and engineering.

CAMP Shibboleth 2.0: Hands-on Technical Workshop (May 13-15)

The CAMP Shibboleth 2.0: Hands-on Technical Workshop will complement the June 2007 Shibboleth CAMP by providing attendees with technical installation and configuration experience with Shibboleth version 2.0. Developed for campuses new to Shibboleth and those with existing implementations interested in upgrading to the 2.0 release, the workshop will offer attendees the chance to:

NJVid - A Statewide Video-on-Demand Repository

Added by the EDUCAUSE Librarian
Title:NJVid - A Statewide Video-on-Demand Repository (ID: NMD08022)
Author(s):Grace Agnew (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey Central Office), George G. Laskaris (NJEDge.Net), and Charles W. McMickle (NJEDge.Net)
Origin:Contributed by or Presented at Net@EDU (State Networks) (02/10/2008)
Type:Presentations/Speeches
Abstract:

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has awarded a 3-year grant for nearly a million dollars to a partnership between William Paterson University, Rutgers University Libraries and NJEDge.Net to develop and deploy a statewide academic video-on-demand repository. The digital video repository (Fedora Commons-based) will he housed in the core of the NJEDge network and will provide "lectures-on-demand", licensed commercial videos, and locally owned videos. A Video Commons collection will be publically available including history, lectures from notables, and video documenting research and scientific advances. NJVid is notable for providing a statewide video strategy to accommodate any type of organization-higher education, K12, public libraries, museums and archives. A substantial part of this project will provide the resources to develop a statewide Shibboleth-based Identity management infrastructure, supporting statewide network authentication and authorization that can be used for many content resources. This presentation will describe the open source architecture and middleware applications that are under development.

7 Things You Should Know About Cyberinfrastructure

Added by the EDUCAUSE Librarian
Title:7 Things You Should Know About Cyberinfrastructure (ID: ELI7028)
Origin:Contributed by EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative, 7 Things You Should Know (08/20/2007)
Type:Articles, Papers, and Reports
Abstract:

Cyberinfrastructure is not a new technology, per se, or merely a better, faster Internet. While cyberinfrastructure brings together high-performance computing, remote sensors, large data sets, middleware, and sophisticated applications (modeling, simulation, visualization), it also involves people as participants in the generation of knowledge, giving them the opportunity to share expertise, tools, and facilities. Cyberinfrastructure merges technology, data, and human resources into a seamless whole.

The "7 Things You Should Know About..." series from the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) provides concise information on emerging learning technologies. Each brief focuses on a single technology and describes what it is, where it is going, and why it matters to teaching and learning. Use these briefs for a no-jargon, quick overview of a topic and share them with time-pressed colleagues.

June CAMP Workshops to Focus on Shibboleth and Secure Collaboration

Created by Colleen Luckett (EDUCAUSE) on April 04, 2007
NMI-EDIT logoTwo upcoming CAMP workshops (detailed below) in Portland, Oregon, CAMP Shibboleth: Flexible Web-Based Authentication and Authorization and Advanced CAMP: Scaling Secure Collaboration, will focus on middleware deployment.

CAMP Shibboleth: Flexible Web-Based Authentication and Authorization

(June 25–27)
Overview: This CAMP will offer concrete practice and real-world experience from institutions running Shibboleth in production for controlling access to both on- and off-campus services. Participants will learn the answers to questions such as:
  • What is Shibboleth and how does it work?
  • What is the business case for it and how can I sell it on my campus?
  • What is the migration path to support intercampus Web SSO in the future?
  • How much identity management infrastructure do I need?
  • How can I use Shibboleth to simplify my application deployment and maintenance?
Higher education IT managers, project managers, middleware architects, and systems analysts involved at a technical, management, or stakeholder level in supporting Web-based services will benefit most from this workshop. Register before May 29 for low, early-bird rates.
