Academic Analytics

Added by the EDUCAUSE Librarian
Title:Academic Analytics (ID: PUB6101)
Author(s):John P. Campbell (Purdue University) and Diana G. Oblinger (EDUCAUSE)
Origin:Publications from the EDUCAUSE Office (10/15/2007)
Type:Articles, Papers, and Reports
Abstract:

The importance of student success (commonly measured as degree completion) continues to rise, as does the demand for institutional accountability. Academic analytics can help institutions address student success and accountability while better fulfilling their academic missions. Academic systems generate a wide array of data that can predict retention and graduation. Academic analytics marries that data with statistical techniques and predictive modeling to help faculty and advisors determine which students may face academic difficulty, allowing interventions to help them succeed. This paper highlights what IT and institutional leaders need to understand about academic analytics, including changes it may require in data standards, systems, processes, policies, and institutional culture.

Academic Analytics: A New Tool for a New Era

Title:Academic Analytics: A New Tool for a New Era (ID: ELIWEB0710)
Author(s):John P. Campbell (Purdue University)
Origin:ELI Web Seminars, Web Seminars Contributed by EDUCAUSE (10/08/2007)
Type:Presentations/Speeches
Abstract:

In responding to internal and external pressures for accountability in higher education, especially in the areas of improved learning outcomes and student success, IT leaders may soon become critical partners with academic and student affairs. IT can contribute to this call for accountability through academic analytics, which is emerging as a new tool for a new era. This session will explore the emerging field of academic analytics and its potential impact on the institution and IT units. John Campbell will share the potential of analytics, explore the role of IT in analytics projects, highlight some early projects, and close with some considerations for building an analytics project on campus and potential policy concerns. The session will be based on an article [PDF 601 KB] published in the July/August 2007 EDUCAUSE Review by John Campbell, Peter DeBlois, and Diana Oblinger.

Jon Udell - Data analysis as performance art

Created by Eric L. Likness (University of Rochester) on July 11, 2007

Check out the article on GapMinder as presented by Hans Rosling at the TED conference

The article starts out with a data analysis provided by Hans Rosling at TED Talks entitled:

"Hans Rosling: Debunking third-world myths with the best stats you've ever seen"

Jon Udell's feeling is this is narrative of data he's seen. And it's not just the tool he uses (GapMinder) it's how he presents it. But screencasts are no different than Hans Rosling using GapMinder live in front of an audience. He's narrating the work of the UN department of statistics on World Health. He's using the tool to tell us what you really can see when the data is used to visualize trends. Screencasting should attempt to reach the same level of communicating things clearly. I watched the video and went to Google to try GapMinder myself. It is in a word mind-boggling the different combinations you can come up with to look at all the data.
