Libraries and IT: are we there yet?

This study aims to look at the impact for users on university library and information technology services, present and future, following merger. The study examined user survey data from the early 1990s through the 2006 LibQUAL survey, collected information through interviews with faculty and Information Services, and examined the National Science Foundation and the American Council of Learned Societies reports on cyberinfrastructure. The paper finds that while the merged information services organization is not yet a resounding success from the perspectives of staff in information services or faculty, it is a brave attempt to respond to the future.

Learning Management Systems and the Merged Organization

Disruptive changes affect all teaching and learning activities at institutions of higher education. Support organizations, especially the library and IT organizations, are often the first to react to but risk being overwhelmed by these changes. Rather than simply react to change, this session will argue that libraries and IT organizations need to define their own futures.

The Future of the Library

Information and technology support organizations in higher education face a future of dramatic and constant change. Digital information creation and delivery is challenging what we know about learning and teaching, and what we assumed would be our roles in higher education. To continue to support scholarly communication, delivery and preservation of digital information, and online teaching and learning environments—to continue to be relevant and helpful to the academic mission—we must radically redefine the services we offer to the academy.

This session will offer an interactive review of the fluid landscape of the changing world of libraries, IT, and higher education, and will draw on the presenter’s experience of leading a forward-thinking merged information service organization. Topics will include defining a new learning/teaching professional, reallocating staff, defining priorities, staffing institutional repositories, finding skilled cross-functional leaders, supporting data-rich scholarship, defining critical literacies for the new millennium, inserting library and technology staff into the curriculum in radical new ways, supporting community learning and learning outside of courses, matrix management organizations, cross-breeding research and social software, and thinking beyond the course management system.

Architectures for Collaboration: Roles and Expectations for Digital Libraries

Libraries are successful to the extent that they can bridge communities and can leverage the diversity of the quest, the research, and the discovery. By building bridges among various sectors, libraries will be able to define themselves in the next generation.

Leading in the "Converged" Library/IT Organization

Many library/IT mergers have been successful and achieved true converge. Others have moved along slowly or faltered. In this session, we will examine the challenges of leadership in such mergers and present strategies for success. The session will include case studies and allow ample time for discussion about the topic.

For the first time in the 115 year history of the University of La Verne, a strategic alignment is under way between the university library and the Center for Teaching and Learning. The two are converging into an Academic Resource Division to maximize space, professional staff, communication, information, and educational technology.

The Content of Collaboration

The author discusses the delicate balance of creating collaborative relationships between faculty, librarians and IT staff. One such Fellowship effort is sponsored by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). In attracting recent Ph.D.s who believe that there are opportunities to develop meaningful linkages between disciplinary scholarship, libraries, archives, and evolving digital tools, the program brings scholars with both teaching and digital experience into the academic library so that they may serve as a bridge between librarians, faculty, and IT professionals.

Paved Path: Integrating IT and Library for a Learning Commons

In what is a uniquely crafted integrated organization and governance structure, PSU's Learning Commons has library and IT people working side-by-side, along with academic support services and a café. This session will highlight what worked, what didn't, and organizational transition issues. (Note: This presentation is a follow-up to last year's presentation by Allard and Fischer.)

Learning Centers, Libraries, and IT: Providing Integrated Support Services in a Learning Commons

Several years ago, Colorado College embarked on an ambitious collaborative venture to create a new, experimental Learning Commons space in its library. The collaboration also spawned a group that provides Integrated Learning Support Services (ILSS) to the campus, benefiting faculty and students. The Learning Commons and ILSS group are serving as a test bed and a brain trust for ongoing design work for a new library. This research bulletin describes the process and product of building The Learning Commons, the successes and challenges of collaboration, and quantitative and qualitative benefits of the work for the campus community.

At Plymouth State University by fall 2006, IT User Support Services will relocate to the library and become a critical component of a new, integrated service mode built around a learning commons.

"Informatics support has some elements of IT knowledge, some elements of library and information science expertise, and some elements of data management skills.... This calls for a team approach including both libraries and IT organizations but also going beyond both at some level."

Change at the University of Kansas: Process, Experimentation, and Collaboration

This research bulletin discusses how leaders at the University of Kansas merged the Libraries and Information Technology into an Information Services department using well-documented strategies for enabling collaboration, group decision making, and mentoring of new leaders. It describes the challenges—and successes—related to making rapid changes in organizational structure, staffing, and services while remaining engaged with users and delivering technology services that were not necessarily tied to organizational boundaries.

Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?: Do Libraries and Information Technology Centers Still Need Each Other?

A decade ago, we surveyed information technology centers and libraries in the Pennsylvania State System to gauge the level of cooperation. With extensive changes in technology, particularly in the library during the past 10 years, how have libraries and information technology centers cooperated? Is there still a need for this relationship?

Preservation of Scholarship: The Digital Dilemma

Marcum notes that content creators today play a critical role in the chain of scholarly communication now that digital capture techniques are widely employed. This role, when coupled with faculty and administrators expectations for long-term access to materials based on the paper model, must now take into consideration the physical lifetimes of digital storage media which are often surprisingly short. From the custodian's point of view, it is now important to capture the attention of the content creator's while they are creating digital content so as to affect the decisions they make and help them make become the stewards of their own intellectual property.
