Podcast: An Interview with Nicole Chittenden, Univeristy of Vermont

Created by Gerry Bayne (EDUCAUSE) on June 29, 2007

In this five and a half minute podcast, wefeature an interview with Nicole Chittenden, Assistant Dean at the School of Business Administration at the University of Vermont. She presented a session at the EDUCAUSE Southeast Regional Conference entitled, "A Preliminary Profile of Student Tablet Use During the Lecture". Here's a description of that session:

What are students doing with their laptops during lectures? This session will describe both students' actual and self-reported use of laptops and Tablet PCs during lectures during a yearlong pilot study with three courses, seven sections, two faculty, and two hundred students during the fall 06/spring 07 semesters.

Student Convertible Laptop/Tablet Requirement

Added by the EDUCAUSE Librarian
Title:Student Convertible Laptop/Tablet Requirement (ID: EPS275)
Author(s):Nicole Chittenden (University of Vermont)
Origin:Contributed by Organizations or Campuses (2005)
Type:Effective Practices
Abstract:

The University of Vermont, School of Business Administration (BSAD) began requiring students to have computers in 1984, moving to a laptop requirement in 1999, and today requires a convertible laptop/tablet computer. In the days of the desktop requirement, students complained that their desktops made very expensive plant stands. Moving students to a laptop computer requirement was easier than expected and student acceptance high. Students tended to buy the biggest, heaviest laptops which were used more as desktop replacements than mobile computing tools. BSAD experience has shown that students did not bring laptops to lectures for a variety of reasons including weight and bulkiness and professors who perceive them as distracting and do not allow their use in the classroom. The school is confident that a convertible laptop/tablet combination will allow greater flexibility and more acceptability for their usage throughout all campus classrooms.
