Abstract:

There are increasing demands on state education networks to provide more enterprise applications and services, including course management systems, video-on-demand content repositories, disaster recovery, and shared high performance computing GRIDS. Beyond the sizable economies of scale and efficiencies to be gained by constituent members, what are the benefits to our community? The panelists will discuss initiatives underway in their states and will describe some of the challenges, strategies and implementation issues to consider when contemplating centrally hosting enterprise applications and resources within your StateNet.

Enterprise 2008: Call for Proposals Now Open; Deadline is January 14

The call for proposals is now open for the Enterprise Information and Technology Conference 2008, a small-scale event ideal for making contacts with peers, engaging in discussion, and discovering new strategies and solutions for dealing with challenges facing those involved in administrative and enterprise information systems and their related technologies. The conference will be held May 28–29 in Chicago, Illinois. The program will follow these tracks:

  • Demonstrating the Increasing Value of IT
  • Infrastructure Evolution
  • Services Evolution
  • Systems Evolution

Submit a presentation proposal. The deadline for submissions is January 14, 2008.

Abstract:

Many schools desire to make improvements to successfully piloted systems to make them truly enterprise systems. This presentation will describe techniques for managing, improving, maintaining, and operating critical enterprise systems. These techniques have been culled from years of experience managing enterprise portals. While the working example focuses on the campus portal, much of this can be applied to other enterprise systems.

Topics will include organization and governance; team communication; developer communication, tools, and environments; testing tools and techniques; code migration; architecting for stability, reliability, and performance; monitoring; statistical reporting; help desk support and issue tracking; and user surveys.

You will leave the seminar with a comprehensive list of possible improvements to an existing system or items to consider when developing the implementation plan for your next system deployment to help make it a truly enterprise-grade system.

WSU has developed a central solution to allow departments to accept online payments from their Web sites without having to accept credit card information. A central payment site allows departmental sites to use the centrally maintained site for payments, while still keeping the look and feel of their own sites.
