What are the critical questions to ask when planning this type of service? What policy and process issues need to be addressed when noncampus users begin to access local resources? What's a federation, and what does it do? This session will offer guidance to help make the transition from intra- to interinstitutional use as easy and straightforward as possible.

Abstract:Enabling student access to shared course resources across a multi-institutional consortium is challenging at best. This session presents a case study in the use of Shibboleth (open source software that supports Web-based, inter-institutional authorization) and the Blackboard course management system and offers suggestions to campuses facing similar challenges. This presentation is offered in collaboration with the NSF Middleware Initiative-EDIT Consortium of Internet2, EDUCAUSE, and SURA.

Abstract:Shibboleth is used to develop architectures, policy structures, practical technologies, and an open-source implementation to support interinstitutional sharing of Web resources subject to access controls. Georgetown University is working with the Washington Research Library Consortium to extend secure, identity-protected access to publishers' resources that have not yet been Shibboleth enabled.
