Podcast: An Interview with Albert DeSimone, University of Georgia - Assessing the Effectiveness of a Portal Solution

In this podcast, we feature an eleven minute interview with Albert DeSimone, Commuications Director for the University of Georgia. As a Communications Officer at the University of Georgia specializing in Information Technology, Mr. DeSimone assists students, faculty, and staff with Web-related projects. He was interviewed at the EDUCAUSE 2007 Southeast Regional Conference regarding his presentation entitled, "Assessing "Portalness: A Guide for CIOs and Other Decision Makers".

The abstract:

Assessing the effectiveness of a portal solution requires more than statistical analysis. In this presentation we will go beyond simple quantitative analysis (number of "hits" or visits) to assess the effectiveness of a portal based on qualitative attributes (integration, personalization, and customization) to assist in the evaluation of a current or future portal implementation.

 

Podcast: An Interview with Bill Ganza, Director of Professional Development at Florida Community College at Jacksonville

Will faculty reduce lectures, become facilitators of learning, and adopt interactive learning methods? Are development tools available to help bring about these changes? Will students benefit? These questions were addressed in Florida Community College's presentation of the SIRIUS Project involving over 300 faculty. The presentation was titled "A SIRIUS Look at Faculty Development".

In this 12 minute podcast, we feature an interview with Bill Ganza, Director of Professional Development at Florida Community College in Jacksonville, Florida. He discuss professional development for faculty and the SIRIUS project that has been implemented at his and other campuses.

Lonnie D. Harvel, Vice President for Educational Technology, Georgia Gwinnett College presented a session at the EDUCAUSE 2007 Southeast Regional Conference entitled, "From Distraction to Interaction: Incorporating Cell Phones into the Learning Environment". In this 13 minute podcast, we interview Mr. Harvel about the emerging role of the cell phone in the classroom.

The cell phone is the most ubiquitous technology students carry today. This session will report on a pilot study on how to incorporate these devices into an effective learning environment that supports both academic and community development activities on and off campus.

This session will describe how the University of Tennessee applied many of the techniques used to build and manage teams to successfully meld these campus units to create an information commons.

In this six and a half minute podcast, we feature an interview from the EDUCAUSE 2007 Southeast Regional Conference. I conducted the interview with Jim Murphy, Director of Instructional Design & Development at Elon University. He presented a session entitled, "Elon's Web-Based Summer School: An Online Success Story".

Elon University has developed a successful summer online courses program, popular with both faculty and students. In this interview Jim Murphy describes the challenges faced in establishing and maintaining the program, highlighting the factors that have helped ensure its success.

In this 14 minute podcast we feature an interview I did with Louis Molina, Professor of English at Miami Dade College. Professor Molina presented a session at the EDUCAUSE Southeast Regional Conference called "Using iPods to Enhance Learning Across the Curriculum".

Louis Molina taught two English Composition classes using the same curricula, and the same course objectives. One class was given iPods to keep class notes, assignments, supplemental information, and syllabus. The non-iPod class used traditional handouts, notes, and the Internet.

In this 56 minute podcast, we feature the opening keynote address from the EDUCAUSE 2007 Southeast Regional Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. It is a speech by Beach Clark, Vice President of Information Technology at the Georgia Aquarium entitled "Information Technology at the Georgia Aquarium: A Trendsetter's Perspective".

This session will portray the challenges of implementing information technology projects at the Georgia Aquarium, the world's largest aquarium. It will focus on lessons learned, system features that bolster business, and suggested areas of improvement both internally and with technology.

This keynote panel discussion, entitled “Weathering the Storm – Preparing for, Responding to, and Recovering from Emergencies,” features Betty Hawkins, program manager at the University of South Carolina, David Sliman, directory of technology at the University of Southern Mississippi, and Frank O’Quinn, deputy policy and IT disaster recovery officer at Louisiana State University. Using examples from their own institutional experiences, they share real advice for emergency preparedness and response, answering the question, “How can we plan and prepare in a way that is realistic and meaningful?”
