Podcast: Challenging IT Leaders to Mashup, Twitter, Tag, and Poke: New IT Strategies for a Digital Society

This 57 minute podcast features the opening keynote address from the EDUCAUSE 2008 Midwest Regional Conference. The speech was delivered by Susan E. Metros, Deputy CIO & Associate Vice Provost at the University of Southern California, and is entitled, "Challenging IT Leaders to Mashup, Twitter, Tag, and Poke: New IT Strategies for a Digital Society".

Today's youth are digitally titillated, visually stimulated, and socially connected. To educate and engage this new breed of learners, institutions of higher education are revisiting and revising the basic tenants of a general education by asking, What does it means to be literate in today's society? As educators transform the way they teach and conduct research, IT leaders also must alter their institution's IT strategy to best support a mobile, global digital citizenry.

ELI In Conversation: Web 2.0 and Digital Storytelling

In this podcast we feature a conversation with Bryan Alexander, Director for Research at the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE) , and Gail Matthews-DeNatale, Associate Director for Academic Technology at Simmons College . This discussion was recorded at the ELI 2008 Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

Digital storytelling merges leading-edge technology with age-old storytelling processes. Digital stories are typically in video format but can also include Web pages, digital maps, and other emerging technology mashups. With the addition of a Web 2.0 focus, audience also becomes co-author. How do these concepts apply to pedagogy and how can instructors evaluate and assess the process and final product?

Gail Matthews-DeNatale presented a session at ELI 2008 entitled, "Digital Story Making: Understanding the Learner's Perspective".

Bryan Alexander presented a workship at ELI 2008 entitled, "Web 2.0 Storytelling".

In this podcast we feature a conversation with Barbara Sawhill, Director of the Cooper International Learning Center at Oberlin College, and Jude Higdon, Instructional Technology Support Team Coordinator at the University of Minnesota. This discussion was recorded at the ELI 2008 Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

Some technology experts question whether we can use the term "Web 2.0" in a meaningful way since many of the components have existed since the early days of the web. There are many definitions floating around for the term. What is meant by "Web 2.0", specifically from a pedagogical standpoint? And how can these tools be used to enhance learning?

Barbara Sawhill co-presented the session "Who's Afraid of Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and the Big Bad CMS?
ELI Podcast: Technology and the Conative Learning Domain in Undergraduate Education

In this 53 minute podcast, we feature a speech by Thomas C. Reeves, Professor of Instructional Technology at the University of Georgia, and is entitled, " Technology and the Conative Learning Domain in Undergraduate Education". It was delivered at the ELI 2008 Annual Meeting.

Although many instructors teach to higher-order cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes and to specific objectives derived from their disciplines, they ignore critical conative outcomes. Fortunately, technology has potential to foster engaged learning and authentic assessment that address the full range of cognitive, conative, affective, and psychomotor outcomes in undergraduate education.

ELI Podcast: Teaching Metacognition

In this 61 minute podcast, we feature a speech by Marsha C. Lovett, Associate Research Professor & Associate Director for Carnegie Mellon University, and is entitled, "Teaching Metacognition". It was delivered at the ELI 2008 Annual Meeting.

As educators, we teach students “content” but also want to help them develop as learners. Metacognition—the process of thinking about one’s own thinking processes and strategies—is essential to both goals, and yet instructors often feel they lack time or expertise to teach metacognitive skills.
ELI Podcast: Connectivism

In this 58 minute podcast, we feature a session by George Siemens, Associate Director for the Learning Technologies Centre at the University of Manitoba, entitled, "Connectivism". This speech was recorded at the ELI 2008 Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

The waves of technological and social change have eroded the effectiveness of traditional views regarding what, how, and why to educate. To effectively educate learners, fundamental assertions need to be rethought: the design of schools and curriculum, the nature of knowledge in a connected world, the relationship between educator and learner, the means and methods of authenticating information and knowledge, and, perhaps most significantly, what it means “to know” in complex, rapidly developing, and chaotic environments. This session will present connectivism as a theory of learning that can bridge the rift between traditional and new educational approaches to prepare learners for the tomorrow they will inherit.

Podcast: Information Literacy, IT Fluency, and Media Literacy - An Interview with Craig Gibson

In this podcast, we feature 15 minute interview with Craig Gibson, Associate University Librarian at George Mason University. This interview was recorded at the ELI 2007 Fall Focus Session in Boulder, Colorado, where Mr. Gibson presented a speech entitled, "Prisms Around Student Learning: Information Literacy, IT Fluency, and Media Literacy". A podcast of that speech can be found here.

The family of literacies now promoted in higher education (information literacy, IT fluency, and media and visual literacies) continues to multiply. These educational agendas call for more pervasive collaboration among all stakeholders (faculty, administrators, librarians, technologists, student life staff, assessment specialists, and others) because of conceptual and programmatic linkages and convergences among them. The blending of these literacies can become a catalyst that taps into student learning and engagement at a deep level and effects cultural change within and across institutions.

This podcast was edited with assistance from Kelly Walker.

Podcast: The Role of Play and Preparing for a Changing Student Population - An Interview with Rachel Smith

In this 9 minute podcast, we feature an interview with Rachel Smith, Vice President of NMC Services for the New Media Consortium. The interview was recorded at the 2007 Seminars On Academic Computing Conference where Rachel Smith presented two session, "Games for Learning" and "The Role of Play and Preparing for a Changing Student Population".

Students are arriving on campus with a set of expectations and behaviors that differ from those of previous generations, including the faculty, who are faced with engaging them in the process of learning. Students' experience with new kinds of games and media has shaped their view of what learning is and how it occurs. This conversation will explore the changing way that young people approach playing, learning, and working and will examine how the concept of play can build bridges between traditional and emerging student populations.

Gary Bertoline on Computer Simulations / Visualizations Learners Can Feel

[When initially posted, the audio file of this interview had some technical problems that hindered listening to it. Those issues have been addressed in the new file, which is attached below. - JSC]

In another interview related to the ELI 07 Spring Focus Session, Immersive Learning Environments: New Paths to Interaction and Engagement, I spoke with Gary Bertoline, Distinguished Professor in Computer Graphics and Assistant Dean at Purdue University. We discussed Gary's project parlor and concurrent session topic for the focus session, The Impact of Computer-Simulated Haptic Force Feedback on Learning.

Over the course of our conversation, Gary explains that "computer-simulated haptic force feedback" refers to providing physical response to learners through computer simulations, essentially allowing them to feel forces in a simulation that they would otherwise have to infer. He then provides a brief overview of the research that demonstrates how such feedback enhances learning outcomes in science, technology, and math education and reviews its potential to support teaching and learning in other disciplines.

We also discuss how advances in technology are rapidly lowering the level of resources needed to incorporate computer-simulated haptic force feedback into teaching and learning. Gary closes our conversation by highlighting the importance of integrating technology into teaching and learning to keep pace with the demands of today's learners and the world they will engage when they graduate.

All participants in the spring focus session will get a brief overview of Gary's research during his project parlor on the first day of the event, March 27. On the second day, March 28, they will have the opportunity to delve much more deeply into his findings by attending either one of the two concurrent sessions on the subject.

Sarah Robbins on Teaching in Second Life

We're about a week from the ELI 2007 Spring Focus Session, Immersive Learning Environments: New Paths for Interaction and Engagement. As usual, I'm interviewing some of the presenters scheduled for the event to get an advanced sense for the issues they plan to address at the focus session.

In this interview, I talk with Sarah Robbins, a TA Instructor in English at Ball State University, about her experiences in teaching classes in the immersive learning environment Second Life. I ask her about the teaching and learning objectives that led her to try to teach in Second Life, as well as the level of technical expertise she feels is or isn't necessary to teach in that online space. We also discuss the benefits she has found that students derive from learning in Second Life, as well as the benefits she has realized as a developing faculty member by teaching in an immersive learning environment.

On the first day of the focus session, March 27, Sarah will conduct a project parlor on her teaching activities in Second Life, which will give all of the session participants a brief overview of her efforts. Participants will then have the option of attending either one of two concurrent sessions Sarah will hold on the second day of the event, March 28, during which she will engage them in her Second Life virtual classroom and help them get a sense for how teaching in that environment works.
