August 1: Free Web Seminar on The Gutenberg-e Project

The Gutenberg-e project was created as a bold experiment to explore whether peer-reviewed, born-digital monographs would alter the way historical scholarship is presented, whether scholars would receive the same professional credit for these publications as they would from work published in print, and whether the project would enable the publication of monographs that would otherwise be turned down for financial reasons by university presses.

In this free August 1 EDUCAUSE Live! web seminar, The Gutenberg-e Project: Opportunities and Challenges in Publishing Born-Digital Monographs, presenter Kate Wittgenstein, consultant, scholarly communication and e-publishing, Columbia University, will discuss the project’s findings and cover both the breakthroughs and obstacles encountered during the course of the project’s development.

New ECAR Study on IT Governance in Higher Education

EDUCAUSE announces a new EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) study, Process and Politics: IT Governance in Higher Education, by Ronald Yanosky with Jack McCredie. This 2008 research study examines the extent of participation in IT governance by campus leaders and constituents; the use of IT governance mechanisms such as IT steering committees, project review, and performance measurement; and practices associated with good IT governance outcomes.

EDUCAUSE Signs Letter Urging Congress to Support Pro-Broadband Legislation

In a letter delivered this week, EDUCAUSE and several other groups have asked that Congress pass the Broadband Data Improvement Act and the Broadband Census of America Act before the 110th Congress ends. The groups say this legislation "would improve information-gathering about current broadband deployment and assist in targeting resources to areas in need of such services." Southwest Regional Conference 2009: Submit a Presentation Proposal

The call for proposals is now open for the 2009 Southwest Regional Conference, "Balancing Acts: Making IT Work for Everyone,” February 24–26 in San Antonio. Note: This year, the conference begins on a Tuesday and ends on a Thursday.

The deadline for submissions is September 9.

The EDUCAUSE Live! Spotlight on Identity Management series is a series that feature one or two speakers from a campus that have analyzed or solved a problem in a way that many people will find instructive.

Indiana University and Purdue University recently asked the Indiana General Assembly to create the Indiana Innovation Alliance. This purpose of the alliance is to expand research in the life sciences and also to improve public health. In this free seminar on July 15, Engagements and Partnerships: Identity Outreach at Indiana University, Kim Milford and Alan Walsh will talk about identity management in the context of this announcement and how it relates to the values that are driving the mission of Indiana University today. Their primary focus will be the partnership between Indiana University and Clarian Health and the challenges faced by doctors, nurses, and medical students who constantly float across organizational boundaries.
